Forums - Sony Discussion - Naughty Dog wants to change the industry by rising above the 'idiot plot'

well everybody is trying to be like Nathan Drake and Uncharted now

I've seen some Unchartedness in Saints row 3

Uncharted Wars 1313, Uncharted Cell Blacklist and i was watching a bit of a Halo 4 walkthrough and i was like "WTF! Is Nathan Drake under that green armor" on a specific part i saw lol

I guess this Naughty Dog influence has really been influencing games for the better and will continue to show in our next gen games

Edit: Just to be clear, I enjoyed the UC series alot. But those kind of arrogant comments rly grind my gears. The industry is not stucked wit ''idiotic plots''. They are ALOT of games with great story, such as Mass Effect and Arkham City, but I don't hear Bioware or Rocksteady making comments making them sound like they are claiming to be the messiahs of game story telling and atleast these guys don't forget that they are making games despite the fact that they still manage to have storys just as strong. Calling the industry on ''idiot plots'' is so exaggerated that I feel like also exaggerating with my comment.

A few exceptions doesn't make a statement for the rest of the industry, games with decent plots is a minority, so not it's not exaggerated .

Sounds like the hype machine is going into a higher gear...

People just love eating it up...

They sound so arrogant. Try being less arrogant and focus on making your interactive movies more like games. Uncharted 3 was a fiasco imo. If other devs are making ''idiot plot'' well ND are making ''idiot gameplay''... well atleast 1/3 or their games are, 2/3 are cinematics/cutscenes/quick timed events.

Keep being arrogant like that and I may reconsider the next time I'll want to buy one of your 60$ DvD.

i find comments like these amusing because the vast majority of my time in uncharted 2 and 3 has been spent in the mp portion where its basically all about gameplay and i must say that imo there aren't many multiplayer games with gameplay as open as uncharted's

I just wished they stopped using scripted events. The burning chateau in Uncharted 3 was terrible, Drake falling down through the burning floor got boring fast.

Bet with ninjablade:

Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.

I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.

You are taking it out of context. 'Idiot Plot' isn't something Naughty Dog just made up, it's a term in films and books. It's NOT an insult. It's when a the protagonist or antagonist does something against their characters normal inclinations, such as a cowardly person deciding to walk into a zombie filled graveyard.  What they are arguing for is that the character should drive the story/theme/plot and not the other way around.

What we get in most games at the moment is a story first and then they design the character to fit that story. This means the focus is then on what goes on and NOT on how the character feels whilst going through the experience. IF you could capture that then the gamer would feel that too.

Enter TLOU.

Not on AAA games. Some have better stories than others, but the vast majority of today's AAA games have some focus on story. I think nowadays it is easier to name a AAA game that has at the very least a ''good'' story than it is for those that have bad stories. Unless they are a racing or fighting games, if a AAA game has a bad story it's usualy getting destroyed by reviews and by fans. Most can't launch a game with a bad story anymore and be successfull.

+ The uncharted games are FAR from having the best stories. I would say UC1and2 had good stories, nothing to complain about but nothing spectacular, the cutscenes and quicktime events were spectacular, the stories were not.

And UC3 had a lame Bmovie story, why did the entire city at the end of the game collapsed like in the movie ''2012'' only because drake shot a rocket at a single pulley? Could'nt they find a better way to explain why that old hag was immortal? And could'nt they find a way that would have been less random for her to die? When the soldiers transforms into teleporting monsters, why is drake not worried? I understand it was because of the drugged water, but at the time I did'nt know that and seeing drake act like everything normal did'nt make any sense, made me think I accidently skipped a cutscene.

So yeah, I'll give Naughty Dog the fact that their games have good stories, but they are far from being the best. All the worshiped they received from Sony fanboys that were blinded by the cutscenes into thinking they were gods at story telling rly got into their heads.

What?! I can't hear you over all this awsome! - Pyrrhon (Kid Icarus:Uprising)

Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful Arrow...FIRE! - Wonder-Red (The Wonderful101)

Naughty Dog dev's aren't coming off as arrogant. The only way anyone would think they are arrogant is if people are reading way to much into the context of what the dev's are saying and getting passion and arrogance mixed up. If you were to ask these people if they've learned things from other developers then they would say yes. ND is very passionate about their work and they think that other developers can learn from their work much like they've learned from others. What's so arrogant about aiming to be the best or offer the best experience per dollar? It's nothing but a circle, don't look too much into it.

Also, your an idiot if you choose not to buy something just because you think they're arrogant. What does that have to do with the quality of the game?

Ummmm...Bluray!

Idiot plot is a real term, look it up. While other games have great storyline, it does not mean they do not contain idiot plot. ND aren't arrogant like you say and if they were they have a right to be because they work harder than 99% of the other devs out there. Stop attacking things you don't understand.

They already have done so with Uncharted to be honest. A lot of games that i have seen/played after Uncharted 2 especially have elements borrowed from the series. Just take a good look at the trailers and gameplay videos for the new Lara Croft game or Dead Space 2 and 3's cinematic moments among others.

Star Wars 1313 is a next gen carbon copy of Uncharted. It wont be the first game and certainly wont be the last.

I love the fact that its ripped uncharted's cinematic story telling (the best in the industry), but would of hoped to have seen it implemented into a more unique gameplay system.
