Hyperion means epic games I think. Not simply based on popularity, but on the same legendary status. Wii sports and nintendogs and Brain Training definitely don't fit that description. Fun, loved by millions, but not epic. No one is debating that Nintendo doesn't have new cool games, but like those......guess not. It will get increasingly difficult to make something like that again, especially in the direction the company is going.......for better or worse.

If Mario Galaxy were called something different, it wouldn't be as celebrated as it is. Nostalgia plays a huge role in Nintendo's holy trinity. These games have been refined and re-defined over the course of two decades. The fundamentals were laid out back in the glory days of the NES. If the Big "N" did pull out all the stops, and made an amazing new IP, we'd love it. We'd buy it. We'd play it. Still, in the back of our minds, the new game wouldn't be as endearing to us as the franchises that shaped our child hoods. Kinda like if a new Sci-fi franchise were released. -No matter how good it would be, many of us would still hold it below Star-Wars.

Why is everybody throwing existing franchises back at him? The guy is asking if Nintendo will produce a *NEW* awesome game which turns into a franchise on a par with Zelda and Mario.

My answer: Not this generation. Mario and Zelda have had years to cement themselves at the top. For another new franchise to come along and be able to rival them would, I think, take at least three generations for people to start seeing it on the same level as Mario and Zelda.

Probably, for the Wii they'll make some retarded katana wielding cyber rabbit or something and it will be a huge hit and sell millions. Its Nintendo, they'll do it eventaully.

Thanks for understanding what I was trying to say =). I guess Animal Crossing is pretty big as well and will probably get better as years pass. I probably should't have even created this thread because some don't even understand my question, which is quite simple: Will Nintendo ever make a game that is epic, of very high quality, and will evoke a wonderful sense of nostalgia ten years from now :p. For those who criticized my including Metroid in Nintendog's pedestal--Fine remov it! And for the person who said my premise was wrong--You're mean =(...Nintendo will make several 'casual' franchises in the future that will outsell Mario and Zelda, but they won't be able to stand next to Mario (I'm looking at you Nintendogs and Brain Training). Casual games will will be copious in Nintendo's future, however I specifically asked about hardcore (hate that word), single-player games on par with Mario and Zelda. You can exclaim how important games like Nintendogs are to the industry, but I don't care much (I'm terrible lol). i think at some point they will i really like theyre wii sports series but i dont think they will make alot of wii sports,also pikmin and animal crossing are good and new so i think they will create a new franchise like them
