Forums - Gaming Discussion - What is the future of videogaming if the Wii U wins this upcoming generation?

There is talk about a need for a tech refresh, more horsepower and greater graphical capability.  Developers have screamed they need 8 GB ram to do what they want.

But,what happens in the end if, despite the next Playstation and Microsoft consoles coming out with mega horsepower, the relatively underpowered WiiU, which just managed to bump up the current gen by economical margins wins out?  What if Microsoft and Sony don't win and bleed a lot of ink and people actually go for the Wii U?  In short, the screams for the 8GB of RAM that was demanded aren't what sells?

What happens if people are ok with marginal upgrade to what is today, but with a new screen and other tweaks?  Or say that none of the above does well enough and say that iOS and Android stuff (sub $20 a piece) ends up being what sells?

What do you see the future holding if mass spike in horsepower doesn't pay for itself?

Hopefully a future where gameplay features like a controller take precedence over eye candy.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

well i personally feel if the PS4 and/or NextBox do worst that WiiU (or at least not close to the number) then we will be in another gaming crashing.

you seem to forget that Nintendo is the only one that experienced a gaming crash so far. I think Nintendo is powerful enough to manipulate th market itself in order to avoid a gaming crash. It's been doing that since the SNES, reason why I think people hate Nintendo, beacuse few understand what they are trying to do.

It could happen but i doubt it. I do think nintendo will do well once they get there act together but i think in the end this generation will sale pretty evenly with no clear winner. It will be very interesting to watch. If any of them has a chance jump far ahead of the others my money would be on the wii u. I dont see sony or ms haveing the huge graphical advantage that they had last time so there may be a large segment of gamers who only by a nintendo system this time if nintendo can get enough third part support to keep them satisfied. If there able to do this they could hurt sony and ms. I have to think with almost 1

The FPS clones of today will finally meet the same fate as the pong clones.
They tried copy Pong.
Now they try to be COD.

1983 all over again. (Though the chances of this happening are pretty low, shooters could live off the U.S alone for a good 10+ years)

There are not enough "bridge titles" in the industry. Things that lure casuals in and convert them into regular videogame consumers. Rather the current state of the industry repels new people (just look at the image of a gamer). For example, I was a Wii convert (no not a GCN one, it was actually the Wii and Halo.) But I'm sure my breed is rare. The industry is kind of stagnating, we have no way to really pull in new audiences. Wii tried that, it couldn't keep most (Again I'm an exception.)

Anyway if the WiiU ever did win (Though I doubt it) It would prove that the industry's current course is a bad one.

Just wondering what you think they are trying to do.

OT: If Wii U outsells both Sony and Microsoft combined than we might have a minor to mid level market crash. The effect would be negated somewhat by smartphones and tablets. This is considering the fact that the third parties invest big into the upcoming consoles and even if they relatively fail. Their demise would take these big companies with them.

What?! I can't hear you over all this awsome! - Pyrrhon (Kid Icarus:Uprising)

Final Ultimate Legendary Earth Power Super Max Justice Future Miracle Dream Beautiful Galaxy Big Bang Little Bang Sunrise Starlight Infinite Fabulous Totally Final Wonderful Arrow...FIRE! - Wonder-Red (The Wonderful101)

PS1 - weakest console
PS2 - weakest console
Wii - weakest console

Can you tell me what they all have in common besides what was stated above?

If I was a betting man I'd say regardless of what is happening now, in 5 years the Wii U will be added to that list and the industry will be perfectly fine.
