Why does this even matter new games compared to last gen game sales.

What about digital sales? I imagine a lot of the people who bought the wii u have bought some games on the eshop.

Hard to say how big the digital numbers are, the number 1 game digitally is NSMBU and I can see that game being a max of 100k, the rest of the games are probably way lower than that.

Since when?

Last time I looked Trine 2: EC was #1 and NSMBU was #3.

You're right I was way off. #1 Trine 2, #2 Little Inferno and #3 NSMBU. Highly doubt the indie games have reach more than 100k (although the Trine dev was very happy with the game sales). But it's impossible to tell at the moment.

So, what would you estimate the total amount of sales are digitally for all combined?  Enough to drop those percentages a little or keep them about the same..

Combined? Well I'm going over a weird analysis here...When Trine 2 launch the first one sold 1.1m units (I'm using this because I couldn't find any official numbers of Trine 2, and since the game is digital VGC only have 3k on the totals) let's say the second one is half of that so 500k, considering the Trine devs are very happy with the sales I would guess the game is aprox 5% of what the totals are (which I'm assuming are 500k), that puts the highest selling game at 25k. Let's say each one decreases 1-2k due to popularity. That puts the top 20 at a total of 310k (aprox).

This is all guesses btw, don't take this too seriously ;)

Edit: considering the software totals for the Wii U on VGC is 4,798,390 I don't think my guess is all that bad, 6% coming from digital sales is very possible imo.

Actually you are about spot on.  The community is about 10k in NA and EU, maybe 11k, some reason euro love the game. JP is around 4 or 5k, which puts the game at about 25k.

Lol and I did that without owning a Wii U xD

Nintendo and PC gamer

Uneducated topic. Compare Wii U to wii. For software comparison, reduce expectations by decrease in hardware sales (20%?). Take away the top selling game for Wii, WiiPlay, which was bought for the remote (25%?). Now compare game sales. About the same level? Great, goodnight.

I blame it on software. Gamecube launched with Melee, Rogue Squadron, and Luigi's Mansion 2. Wii launched with Twilight Princess, Trauma Center, Wario Ware, Wii Sports. Wii U launched with.... NSMBU , Nintendoland, ZombiU, and a whole bunch of ports.

Gamecube had it's most popular title at launch. Wii was launched with the most hotly anticipated Zelda ever. Wii U launched with another New Super Mario Bros, a minigame collection, a very difficult and controversial Zombie game.

It's easy to see why the Wii U is sucking.

It's funny how a lot of people will say that we shouldn't compare the Wii U to the Wii because one is last gen and the other is next, but people did it to the PS3 and the PS2. I'm not saying it's the same people saying it but, they weren't the same people saying we shouldn't.

I agree, digital sales might off set this, because I know I purchase a great deal of games from the eShop, the PSN store and the Marketplace. Also the high price of the Wii U could be a factor as well, but how did the PS3 fair when it launched?

I agree with this except for it sucking.

On the casual side, Wii U needed Brain Age at launch, as well as other Ds successors, to replace wii fit.  It's all about those morning talk shows when it comes to casual trendiness.

Are people forgetting that most of the games on Wii U are on other systems with much larger user bases, for cheaper prices? AC3, ME3, Batman and so forth. id bet my bottom dollar that must be a factor if not a large one.

This. The ports were not enough to make people buy it again. No graphical update and meaningless features can't do magic. They had big franchises for this launch (Mario, JD, COD, AC) and Nintendo simply let the holiday go missing a big oportunity.

From now on we have these games coming likely before E3: Lego City Undercover, Game and Wario, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, The Wonderful 101, MH3 Ultimate, Rayman Legends, Aliens port.

Bayonetta and SSB are 2014 at best.

That line-up wouldn't look bad if the console had third party support to fill some gaps between those games.

Nintendo needs to go and get at least some ports released at the same time, and in my opinion this should be the ones: GTAV (Rockstar support), RE6 U Edition-REvelations Unveiled-Remember me (Capcom support), Tomb Raider-FF XIII LR (SE support), Next Splinter Cell (moré Ubisoft). I'm sure even if they can get a DSII port it could grab the attention of some 'dedicated' gamers.

Let's see what Nintendo can do about this, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think Lego will do ok, Game and Wario, not sure how that does on home consoles. Pikmin3 will be a slow burn IMHO, that is not a system mover. Same for Wonderful 101., not a system mover. MH3 wont do anything for the system outside of Japan, Rayman MIGHT do something for Europe but after the last game im not holding my breath. Aliens will do just like the 3rd party ports i mentioned which will be f**k all.

GTA5 aint happening at least not at the same time, RE6 I could see, but like I said late ports are not going to do anything, Remember me, doubt it. Tomb Raider, they already said no, FF13, dont see it, thats not a system mover either.  Splitner Cell, doubt it.

2D Mario >>>> Zelda franchise

Call of Duty: BLOPS 2 is much bigger third party franchise than anything the Wii launched with.

It's not like this was a 8 month old port, it was only a few days after the PS3/360 releases.
