Forums - Nintendo Discussion - WiiU is doing horrible in America, we need to talk about it

People buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games.

There was two Nintendo developed titles at launch: A new IP and a game that is basically already available for the 3DS and Wii.

The mystery is solved.

Agreed that Nintendo hampered NSMBU a bit, but a new Mario is still a new Mario, NSMBU is a completely different game from any other NSMB game.

Nintendo Land also features a lot of Nintendo IP.

The Wii really only launched with Zelda (which actually was on the GameCube as well, more or less the same game) and no other real Nintendo franchise. "Excitetruck" was a very loose spin-off of the obscure Excitebike.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 alone more or less renders NSMBU redundant. People don't want to buy a whole new console for a game that is basically available on all current Nintendo consoles. Only hardcore Nintendo fans would buy the console for this title.

People don't know what to expect from Nintendo Land. It pretty much seems like (well, and actually is to some degree) a pack of gimped versions of high quality Nintendo titles mixed with Mario Party. Again, only hardcore Nintendo fans would buy a new console for this title. Others would wait for the real deal.

Another thing to consider is the price. When the Wii launched it was pitched against a $600 PS3, and the successor to the original Xbox (also with a higher price tag). Now, the Wii U (whether we like it or not) was pitched against the PS3, 360 and even the Wii - all with more games and lower price tags.

And then there is the motion controls which made the Wii appeal to people who had never even played video games before. The Wii U has nothing that is even close to the then revolutionary motion controls. Nintendo Land is not even close to a "Wii Sports" title. Heck, Nintendo even skipped the Wii franchise completely for the Wii U launch, for whatever reason.

Bottom line: HIgh sales should never have been expected in the first place.

You doing it all wrong: WiiU is a MAJOR flop in America, we need to talk.
That's the correct code for joke-threads.

That would be offensive, I refrain from offending anyone. Just want to have a chit chat with what was who.

You do not need two near-identical threads made by yourself; in addition to another 3 or so threads from other users in the past hour or so, IN ADDITION to the still active NPD thread.

Your aim is not chit-chat. It is an attempt at doing a "Vita", as it were. Your post  would suggest this, even. Why is this? I don't know, there must be a reason. However, reiterating abuse is one thing, but 'playfully' masking it is another. I'd reccomend making it a joke thread.

We should talk about it, though. There's little to talk about. 720 and PS4 remain on 0 sales, correct? If they come out at 75% and 65% of the Wii U sales respectively in their first December (assuming they launch in November), then we have a comparison. Then, the WiiU would not have done "horrible" in America. It is subjective. We are unaware of what market is willing to move up to the next generation, and when. For all we know it may not get better than this, and that would be sad. In this scenario would it be fair for a barrage of, I dunno, double the number of threads currently circulating from this NPD news (as it sells worse and there's direct comparison)? I think so. However, this move would likely not be made because I don't feel as though people will see it in that way.

You have the other side, though. The Wii sold gangbusters at launch, and the Wii U is selling below the PS3 in the respective December (which I must stress was NOT a horrible launch, look at the comparison threads). This does cause concern, but again no direct comparison can be made. The fairest would be to the 360 at its launch, but I have no figures to hand sadly. I do feel like a pricecut+Mario/other AAA 10mil+ series will launch shortly before the next consoles do, and as such will fend them off to make my initial argument a definite possibilty. Or, Nintendo could burn down their offices, brick all WiiU's and go out of business forever. That's just as likely a scenario as anything else for we know nothing concrete about the other consoles, so any discussion is meaningless.

So we've talked about it, and the take-home message really is "what "is" horrible"? Selling on the low-end of expectations is one thing, but that's purely subjective. If I predicted it to sell 150k in December then I'd be stunned, for example. Without this direct comparison, which will give us information about the gen switchover and the current state of the market, that's all we can do. That's a purely neutral standpoint I feel, and one I shall stand by.

I hope this has answered your "questions".

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Its still selling twice as much as the Vita, and the sales on that quadrupled from the usual 10k of last year.

It is also only half of what the 3DS is selling.

I mean... its 90k, is it really that bad? I think you're overeacting.

Dont you worry, Nintendo will strike back. They always do. It was Pokemon a couple of days ago for the 3DS, and you can imagine what it will be for the Wii U. Remember Nintendo hasnt announced anything for post E3 yet except pokemon for the 3DS a few days ago. Also, monster hunter 3 ultimate is just around the corner.

3 threads today...yeah this will be worse than the Vita.

not until it has 3 threads a day for 8 months..

Casuals preferred to spend their money on $600+ tablets and smartphones while hardcore went to PS360 looking for AAAs like GTA5 in 2013.

WiiU gave a smell of: it's not causal neither hardcore. it explained why so low sales in USA.

Here I go again...

PS3 supply during November was, to say the least, not very good. Thus creating a large amount of pent-up demand for December. Crap November sales. Good December sales.
Contrast with Wii U, well-stocked at launch and still having almost the same amount of demand as the PS3 did in December (which was cray demand). Solid November sales. Solid December sales. Could be better.
The "Wii U didn't live up to our expectations" thread was by far a superior way to cast negativity upon Wii U's launch.

It's easy to look at the numbers and say that PS3 is doing better in the US than Wii U, but I personally prefer to pair numbers with reality.

I don't think sub-500k is "good" sales for any platform in December unless there is heavy supply restriction and 100% sell-out (basically).
