I do think it will be a better thing in the long run if we allow the subsidies to expire, because then we can have a more productive debate about which subsidies really need to stay and which ones are better left expired.

Like most political institutions, farm subsidies had their noble origin.

glad we can see eye to eye.

we should start with planned parenthood and pbs/nbr

I meant ag subsidies specifically.

Planned Parenthood is a teriffic investment, and it's a shame that they can't get abortion funding. Reproductive advancement is one of the quickest ways to advance a society.

yeah feeding people is a horrible investment, killing is much better. less mouths to feed means less food needed!

Not an American, however I am happy to see the market distorting subsidies end (if they do). US farm subsidies are destabilizing globally. If milk cost 7 bucks to make with a small profit margin then that should be the price, if you don't like it don't drink milk, or drink less milk. I have not drank milk in decades... it is not a necessity of life.

It is hard to fathom a country so afraid of a single payer health care system that benefits everyone, is so quick to hand out goodies to special interest groups like farm groups, banks, etc... in the quest for votes and cash donations to the campaign.

Possibly my fault as i didn't specify, but i meant that we should let certain agriculture subsidies stay gone, while others come back. Farmers obviously deserve support, but to what degree, and for what specifically, is another question entirely. Hitting off cotton subsidies would really help West Africa, and corn subsidies would improve the health of our food drastically.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Welp, I'm already paying $3.89 for a HALF gallon of Stonyfield so whatever.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Not an American, but if farming was subsidized there, weren't you paying extra for American food through your taxes anyway?

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

I'm already paying $2.50/1L (~$10 a gallon) for the brand I drink in AUS.

If you are not happy with milk prices reaching $7.50/gallon get your own cow, feed it, milk it and clean the shit. I am sure the time spent producing your own milk will cost you more than $7 a gallon.

Sort of, but not really, just because there isn't a direct link between the subsidies and the need to raise revenue for the subsidies. Cheaper milk is a benefit we reap as US citizens, but not something we directly pay for.

Speaking of you, Troll_Whisperer, your current host-country is absolutely infamous for its farm subsidies. The Japanese government pays for so much rice to be made (but a more expensive type of rice than is made in other countries) that it literally just goes to waste.

I don't doubt it, Japan is an extremely protectionist country. Europe is not very different either. I heard in Spain the often plant whatever is subsidized by the EU at the moment, even if they know the soil and weather conditions are not the best, and let it all go to waste.
Not sure it's true but I wouldn't be surprised.

Most people have an incredibly hard time grasping this concept, though. If they see $2.99/gallon at the store, they see themselves as paying $2.99/gallon, even if a portion of taxes they paid are also going towards that milk.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.
