Well maybe we will see the ps4 next year? Maybe a December Japan release with a Feb-march release to the rest of the world.

I don't know why you people are even discussing the PS4 when Xbox 720 searches have clearly outnumbered the PS4 in google searches. People aren't even interested in the PS4 anymore, it already lost the next gen console war before it could even grace store shelves.

what are people typically typing when searching. Are they typing Playstation, PS3, PS4, playstation 3, playstation 4? xbox, xbox 360, 720, xbox 720 etc?

you get different results depending on that factor.

CPU: Ryzen 7950X
GPU: MSI 4090 SUPRIM X 24G
Motherboard: MSI MEG X670E GODLIKE
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR PLATINUM 32GB DDR5
SSD: Kingston FURY Renegade 4TB
Gaming Console: PLAYSTATION 5

How did this happen? Well for starters Sony should never have launched the PS3 at such a high price point, 500/600 bucks, that definitely hurt their brand. The launch games were not that stellar, and people lost interest real quick. Other than Uncharted and GT5 there weren't many big blockbuster Sony exclusive hits on PS3. The Gran Turismo games (their best system sellers) were few and far in between. Sony lost a lot of exclusivity to many of its best third party games that helped drive PS1, PS2, and PS3 sales like GTA, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Crash, Spyro, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Ace Combat, Assassins Creed, Metal Gear Solid, and more. Putting the Cell processors in the PS3 was also a big mistake, and it made games harder and more expensive to produce on PS3. And as a result many third party games simply looked better on Xbox 360. Blu Ray has not generated the same kind of excitement for the PS3 like the DVD player did for the PS2. Sony has lost touch with its casual audience that were so profound during the PS1 era with Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Littlebigplanet has not lived up to the same standard. The PSN hacking debacle really hurt them, and probably defected customers to Xbox Live. Sony really has been playing it too safe when it comes to innovation, and trying to copy the Wii Mote with Playstation Move made them look desperate and out of ideas. And the PS controller could use an overhaul since it's basically the same damn controller since the 90s. Also, the console itself is weird looking and unsexy like the PS2. The PS3 Slim and Super Slim did not help, and looked like a step backwards in design.

Are there any other important factors I forgot about? I could probably give hundreds of reasons but i'd be here all night.

So, you needed all that to tell us PS2 and PS were badass system which kicked everyone's ass which PS3 is not of which we have known for 5 years now.

He is probably just backing up what he is saying by putting graphs etc... to prove his argument.

Im interested in the ps4 but yet I've never searched it on google and yet i've actually searched 720, maybe because I wanna see what the big fuss is about. Google is also not the most used search enhine in japan where the ps3 usually shits all over the 360.

Well Google dominates in North American search and the PS4 needs to be successful in North America to win the next gen war.

Have we seen the best of Playstation as a brand?

I've said this many times; from roughly 96 to 06 the playstation didn't have much competition, sega insisted on shooting their own foot and nintendo never gained the momentum they had with the SNES.

But at this point the market is saturated with 3 strong brands. And amidst that competition the PS3 has been gaining market share quite rapidly in the last few years.

Your conclusion is actually irrelevant to your graf. The shipments are falling but the brand is recovering from the disastrous ps3 phat era.

The console market was much smaller before.  PS1 gen only like 150 million consoles were sold, and PS2 gen only like 200 million consoles were sold, now we're pushing 300+ easily.  There is a lot more room for competition, it's not really surprising that this happened.  This is the first time Sony had overlapping handhelds too, which should have helped but it hasn't.

Its Ironic that in the past there were more game systems competing for market share with a smaller market verus now with a bigger market and less compeition, interesting to note anyway. I just thought we have more competing systems in his era an not less, but the Ouya and the Steambox are coming, so maybe the number of systems will match the bigger market. As for handhelds, how many times Nintendo juggled overlapping handleds? 4 times now by my count, so why cannot Sony?

i'm not saying Sonys shouldn't, i'm saying this is their first chance for overlapping handhelds meaning it should have been a chance for better overall playstation brand sales, but it just didn't happen that way due to quickly dying psp and slow starting psv.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Similar pattern when the PS2 was slowing down, Vita sales will eventually pick up and PS4 will bring that line up. Nothing to worry about.

Huh? Not remotely similar. Lol. As evidenced by the fact that shipments will set new decade (more actually) long lows.

its all so easy isn't. PSV will def pick up and PS4 will def be a success.

Going by the graph sales are only slightly below PS2's worst year (and before the release of the PSP), for a slowed down PS3, the PS2 (12 year old console), a dead PSP, and newly starting PSVita. 2013 could be a little lower, the PSP will probably be discontinued and sadly enough possibly the PS2, the PS3 will be selling less then 2012 or on par (with a price cut), and the PSVita will likely start picking up with a price cut as well and hopefully some killer games. PS4 should be announced in 2013 and then later release holiday 2013.

FY 2013 without a PS4 it will be its worst year since 2000.

The comparitive year in terms of gen cycles for FY 2012 (this year) is 2005.

The year before it took off ^_^
