I don't believe they are comparable. 2D platformers are a completely different experience than 3D ones. Sure both can be described the same way, "jumping around an environment progressing from one location to another with obstacles", but they are far from the same.
Compare 2D artsy platformers like Limbo and Braid to 3D ones like Journey and the Unfinished Swan. They are worlds apart. Of course people can prefer 2D over 3D just like people can prefer action over puzzle games I guess so being different genres doesn't matter.
I like both! Why isn't THAT an option? =(
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
I like 3D platformers more because they give incredible freedom of movement. You play them differently every time. 2D plats in comparison feel constrained and linear, even the Metroidvania-like ones.
I just love playing with the controls in 3D platformers, jumping on and off stuff, smashing stuff and shit. Such joy. 2D plats don't give me the same kind of feeling. I usually just want to progress.
Either, as long as they are non-linear. 3D provides more opportunity to be non-linear but then Galaxy and even things like Super Meat Boy happened.
For the most part, when it comes to gameplay, 3D platformers can do everything 2D platformers do imo. I'd have to say 3D easily.
I can't finish a 2D platforming game to save my life. I suck at the old school games.
Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.
Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
