I don't believe they are comparable. 2D platformers are a completely different experience than 3D ones. Sure both can be described the same way, "jumping around an environment progressing from one location to another with obstacles", but they are far from the same.
Compare 2D artsy platformers like Limbo and Braid to 3D ones like Journey and the Unfinished Swan. They are worlds apart. Of course people can prefer 2D over 3D just like people can prefer action over puzzle games I guess so being different genres doesn't matter.
