Forums - Gaming Discussion - What does the word "flop" mean?

So since so many people seem to be confused or have different views on what the word flop means I thought I'd make this thread.  First off flop is a slang word, and I'm not 100% postive but I'm pretty sure this word originated in sports.  However here is all of the synonyms on the word flop and why it is viewed in many different ways.

be unsuccessfulfailmissfounderbust (USslang), flop (informal), plough (Britishslang), fall shortwash outscrew up (informal), underperformnot make the grade (informal), not come up to scratchunderachievebe found lackingnot come up to the mark (

Flop should mean not turning a profit or break even.

Well, the modern definition of losing a war is entering with a set of objectives, and not having achieved them when the war is over. I see flop in video games as something similar. For example, Nintendo games are supposed to push hardware, if they don't, it doesn't matter that much if they sell well.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Watch the Miami Heat play and you will know what flop means.

Lol.

Well my Mavs still beat them 2011 so it doesn't bother me =P.

OT - I think flop in terms of a video games performance should mean it didn't make a profit or just barely broke even.

But I think this is hard to determine since most developers don't really tell you how much it cost them to make their game. Right?

Not selling on par or exceeding the expectations of the consumer.

No profit or an unsustainable amount of profit.

Mavs and Knicks are my two favs.  The only reason I like Mavs is because Vince Carter though, and Jason Kidd before going to the knicks.   My 3 fav players, Melo, Carter, and Kidd which is odd because Kidd and carter was on the same team and now Melo and Kidd.  I wish Carter would win a title before he retires.

Anyways it is a slang term so it will have many different terms which is what I've been saying for a while now.  I'm surprised so many people didn't already know this.  Someone stated in my other thread that selling below expectations is called a critical flop even if it makes a profit, so their probably is different ways of using the the word flop, which would go with the word underperform.

The definition that always cracks me up is the, "I saw like 10 or 12 guys on the forums saying they thought it was going to be an awesome game but it didn't sell/score as well as they thought so it must be a flop."
