Forums - Gaming Discussion - Next generation console development is seriously hurting the Wii U.

Wii U will get most of Japanese third party support and thats good enough for me (and Japan). I'm personally done with all the glitchy graphicsfocussed games and realized Japanese games are the only one with actual gameplay. Japan will realise the development cost are way to high for the PS4 because the main focus will be graphical power and therefore make games for Wii U and 3DS. The same is happening with 3DS/Vita right now. Nintendo already took over Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and Bayonetta. This may only be the beginning.

Also: the Japanese market is WAY larger en profitable than the western countries.

Nice post, Derp.

Once Japan comes online fullyband those developers start embracing the Wii U, Nintendo will have nothing to worry about. All those great Japanies games will be exclusive to Wii U beacuse of its bigger installed base.

Then once PS4 & 720 come out, their smaller installed base and high R&D costs will force developers to make games for Wii U as well.

I think Wii U will be OK.

why would you think this if it didn't even happen with the wii?

IMHO, It did not happen last time because the PS2 crushed everyone world wide and everyone was expecting the PS3 to do it again, so every developer was getting ready to support the safer bet and that means developing assets and textures in HD, working with complex architecture and large amounts of data, when the Wii won the higher install base it was just too late to come back, some big companies did make some adjustments (DQ X, Monster Hunter 3, Tales of Graces, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, etc) and some small ones made the effort (Muramasa, No More Heroes, Little's King Story) but the tides were turned way before that.

I don't agree. I think for some major games the fanbase is very solid on the ps3. That's why we saw games like FF and One Piece even towards the end of the generation. The size of the userbase hardly matters to third parties really...what matters is on what system their games sell the most

If developers are only motivated to work on the largest projects for the most advanced hardware available than why are there so many games produced for the iPhone/iPod or Nintendo DS/3DS?

The reality is that there are (maybe) a few developers at the top couple dozen studios in the world that truly get to pick and choose the projects they work on, for everyone else it is a job where you're told what to do, when to do it and for what price. Certainly, it is a cool job for those who have it but the average developer gets joy out of trying to get that extra "ounce of power" or producing the most detailed artwork on the platform they're working on; which (more often than not) is on mobile phones, handheld systems, previous generation systems, underpowered systems, or for low budget games.

The question of whether "next generation development" will hurt or help the Wii U largely depends on what publishers decide is the best strategy. I don't doubt that the studios that produced the top 50 best selling multi-platform games for the PS3 and XBox 360 will probably be directed to big budget games; but I also expect that the typical Wii developer will be pushed towards the Wii U, with the typical HD console developer (who didn't see 1+ million in sales) will receive a similar budget to what they had with the HD consoles and (probably) focus on games being released to the XBox 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4 and XBox 720.

We've seen with Bungie and Infinity Ward whole studios prepared to walk if they don't get their way. Publishers may own the studio but a company is in reality just a piece of paper, what they don't really own are the people. So what about the rest? We're getting to the point where the games industry is becoming a dumbell shape with a lot of big expensive games on one end and a lot of cheap/next to nothing games on the other and very little in between. If you're not a 'big studio' then you're more likely to be a little studio chasing the growth potential of F2P, Fremium and cheap mobile games. Essentially you're either trying to be the next Call of Duty or you're trying to be the next League of Legends/Angry Birds.

Tease.

Again, people don't realize how the 'next-gen' will cost for developers. Many have been bankrupt by this gen alone. Imagine the transition from this gen to the next and how much it will cost. I see most third parties sticking with the current gen for a while before PS4 720 due to big costs associated with that, only some with the available capital will be able to do so. Which is why Nintendo, in my opinion, is in a better position than PS4 and 720 as only slightly superior to the current gen, the transition won't be too costly.

How is the Wii U in a better position? Industry leaders have been begging for the next gen to start because there needs to be a transitional leap in the performance of games today. Ubisoft, especially has been fronting this whole issue. Nintendo will be behind when the new consoles come, but for Nintendo fans this should not be an issue.

Industry leaders yes, but are the consumers ready to jump the boat - I'm not so sure. Video games fanatics like us will purchase the latest technology, however will the average consumer who sees a PS3 and Xbox 360 at 199$ compare to 720 and PS4 at over 400$ purchase it? I wouldn't count on it. Furthermore, like I mentioned, I think you will be surprised on how many developers will not go ahead and fully support the next Xbox or PS4 until that user base is installed and it will be up to the first party developers to do the expanding. Wii U, 720 and PS4 will not get much third party support until the 2nd year on the market as they want a return on their investment. Its business. Look at the PS3 when it launched and the games it had. Then compare that to the support the PS2 in comparison to PS3's first year. PS2 was the platform of choice - safer investment, more profitable.

Furthermore, development costs will not be more costly that they are right now for the Wii U due to it being slightly above current gen consoles. Hence, will developers support the next PS4 and 720 with a hefty investment and bill attached to it, or will they support the Wii U which has a lesser investment risk? I think you know the answer.

Fucking hell. The console is only 3 weeks old. Lets evaluate the system after 6 months/a year and then talk about support or lack of it.

I second this. And let's apply this to the half dozen Wii U doom threads in progress.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Release Date: February 19, 2013 (PS3, Xbox 360)
Coming to Wii U? We asked the game's producer, Yuji Korekado, at an event in Los Angeles last week. Here's the transcript:

Kotaku: Do you have plans to bring Revengeance to Wii U?
Korekado: No.
Kotaku: Why not?
Korekado: We really developed the game based on these two consoles [PS3, 360] and the Wii U, we think, is unique in a way that the controller is innovative and the entire console's pretty much not hand-in-hand with the consoles that we're making it for now. So if we were going to make it for the Wii U we'd have to start from zero again and really design something for that console, so we could say 100% that it was a good game for this console.
Kotaku: Could Wii U run the Revengeance engine?
Korekado: I haven't really tried it, so I'm not quite sure.

This pretty much sums up the 3rd party situation of the Wii U right now - Nintendo completely messed up the market timing of launching this new console and working with the developers 12 months prior to this launch to make sure they started working on porting games or at least being aware and thinking of the Wii U. The games coming out in 2013 didn't take 12 months to develope but have been in development for at least 2 years. You can't just expect 3rd parties to drop everything and create new teams for Wii U ports at the last minute especially since Wii U's install base is currently less than 1.5 million consoles and the targeted consoles have 140 million users!

The Wii U will probably get a lot more games in 2014 and onwards since developers working on next generation console games now have the Wii U in mind (since it's 2012). The problem with that is Nintendo is missing a huge opportunity on building a 10 million userbase before the next generation Xbox next / PS4 arrive. The fact that they didnt' even have a "Killer Nintendo App" for launch or on the horizon shows they rushed the launch of the Wii U. I hope Nintendo does well but strategically, I think their management really missed the mark. When PS4/Xbox 720 launch, they'll have no choice but to lower prices next fall and by the looks of it the next 6 months are not going to give non-Nintendo fans many reasons to buy it for $350 (+ you'd need an external HDD, so it's really $400+).

With so many cross-platform games and decent number PS3 exclusives coming out next year, existing console gamers are too busy worried about having enough money to buy all the games they want to play instead of spending $350 + HDD on a new console that won't even have those games, but neither does it have the killer 1st party line-up of Nintendo either. I seriously don't understand how Nintendo went from NES/SNES and slowly over time ended up where they are today.

That's some pretty shitty logic.... If you're in the business because you love games you probably also love the challenges in making those games, and therefore everyone would be developing for the Wii U right now.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Boooring. Speculation is fun.

At least if everyone is wrong you can laugh at them later.
