Yup, I pretty much asked him to do this. I want to see what makes the PS2 library the best.

Yes, but the DS has all that as well plus 2D Mario, Mario Kart, and freakin Pokemon! |
ok and PS2 has gran Turismo, Burnout, Jak, Ratchet, Sly, Team ICO games, God of War, Tony Hawk (when it was cool), Socom (again when it was awesome), DMC, and like a gazillion others.
Software sales:
1 | PlayStation 2 (PS2) | 658.26 | 553.77 | 219.60 | 207.32 | 1,638.95 |
4 | Nintendo DS (DS) | 354.82 | 174.05 | 176.84 | 69.24 | 774.95 |
PS2 is probably the winner in this debate. However, the DS had enough mass appeal with certain titles to overcome this setback (hardware-wise). DS easily has sold more software than any other handheld console, for sure.

The DS library is significantly more front-oriented than the PS2 library, which is why the number of 5 million sellers is the same despite the PS2 having more than double the DS total software sales.
For further evidence, the DS had 129 games sell more than one million copies, but the PS2 has 325. It's completely safe to say that the PS2 wins the software war by the sheer depth of its library, while the DS hardware is the David to PS2's Goliath. And indisputably, both of these systems have a place in my gamer heart. Sly Cooper, Ratchect & Clank, Advance Wars, and Ace Attorney are easily my favorite franchises on those excellent systems.

DS also has a gazzillion other games. But I don't even have to mention that, because Pokemon > all those games you mentioned combined... Because it's freaking Pokemon!
I LOVE ICELAND!

Chrono Trigger is on PS2 due to BC. Squeenix RPG galore as well with new ones plus the PSone ones. |
Wait, are we counting backwards compatibility towards the systems' libraries? I would have, but the OP didn't mention it, and this is pezus's thread, so I wouldn't question it.
But if you're sure you want to do that, you're adding Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, A Link to the Past, The Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion & Zero Mission, 2 F-Zero games, more great Pokémon, Castlevania, Fire Emblem, and Advance Wars games, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Golden Sun, and enough Squeenix RPGs to nearly break even with PS1, including FF Tactics Advance, FF 1&2 (Dawn of Souls), and FFVI to the mix.

shouldn't count remakes the same as original games though

That seems like an arbitrary restriction, especially considering the PS family has just as many remakes and collections as the DS. Plus, most of the remakes (especially of NES games) are considerably enhanced for their PS/PS2/GBA/DS releases.
I mean, if you can play Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI on either console, why shouldn't those count for more than whatever much lesser RPGs may have been made for the systems?
For me, easily the DS - and I didn't even care much for the Zelda games for it.
To me, the PS2 had a lot of pretty good games but only one exceptional game, RE4, which I prefer on the Gamecube. Other good games that were on PS2 (Splinter Cell, Viewtiful Joe, etc) I also prefer on other consoles.
Regarding exclusives, I did really like the GOWs and MGS3 Subsistence, though. And I've never played much of SotC.
Ps2 has the better library, love them both.
Bet with ninjablade:
Ninjablade wins if the next 5 multiplat on the wii u are inferior to the 360 version.
I win if one of the 5 mulitplats are on par or superior on the Wii U.
pezus said: Nah, we shouldn't count backwards compatibility I think. It complicates things way too much. We're just looking at the software support for each system |
Alright, now that's out of the way, what of remakes and compilations? Mega Man X Collection & Mega Man Zero Collection, etc.?
