Forums - Sales Discussion - When does a generation end?

A generation never ends. The Ps2 is still 6th gen. Ps1 is still 5th gen and I'm still Generation Y

A generation doesn't end until all of its consoles are off the market. We may switch our terminology to refer to newer devices as "current-gen", and the older ones "last-gen", but multiple hardware generations can run concurrently. Actually, gen 6 is still ongoing right now since the PS2 is still being sold. Three generations at once. Probably for not much longer.

Edit: For further clarification, I'll try to use living beings as an analogy. Multiple generations of humans can live at the same time. The life of an older person doesn't end when a younger one is born, though there is a point in time after which a person must be considered a part of a new generation. New generations bring change to the table, but a generation ultimately stops existing when its members cease to exist. Relevancy is a seperate issue.

My thoughts exactly.

keep dreaming. it will never be that simple.

a gen. ends when sales of all consoles in that gen. sale at a point to where they've all been discontinued or can be.

or the consoles sales are no longer a point of reference/importance even though they still can be purchased.

how about this one. when ninty discontinues Wii, then the 7th gen. ends. when there is only 1 console from that gen. till selling, then that gen. ends resulting in an over lap of gen's where in the last console selling wins.

When everybody has moved on.

Generations don't end/start abruptly, there is overlap.

To me a Generation ends, when the last 1st party exclusive is released for that generation, and the new generation begins when the replacement console is released, AND no more 1st party exclusives are in the works for previous generations. For for Nintendo, the 8th generation has started, since no more DS and Wii games are in development from Nintendo. However Sony and MS are still in the 7th generation, so right now we're in a 7/8th generation overlap, where Nintendo and Sony handhelds have clearly transitioned to the 8th gen, while HD consoles remain on the 7th gen, which is ending.

After The Last of Us and Gears of War: Judgement release, to me, the 7th generation will be over. While the 8th generation will be official to me, Sony and MS will still have yet to enter a console to compete. However the focus will have permanently switched to the 8th gen.

so the 6th gen. is still on! no wonder Sony fans keep talking about PS2. oh and since it was the last gen. SEGA had a console in. Sega fans will never let it die lol.

I ment the companies not the fans...People will always go back to play older consoles.

When Sony says so.

When Sony says it does.

As far as I am concerned, the gen has ended. The wiiU is out, the next gen has started. What happens now doesn't matter.
