Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Has anyone used a harddrive with their WiiU yet?

Thanks, everyone, for the help. I'm seriously bummed that I can't put my disks on the harddrive. It makes me want to go digital...but then I won't be able to loan games to friends or take the game to their houses. I think I sense Nintendo's evil scheming at work here.

What? If you could buy a game, load the info to your HDD, and then not ever need the disk again, then you could give all of your friends a free copy of every game you buy. When you copy data to the HDD, it doesn't delete what's on the disk. To say Nintendo is evil for that is way off base, dude.

Why would any retail game let you copy it to a hard drive? I'd be renting a lot more games if that was the case

Ha...I know.  I love Nintendo, I was mostly being facetious there.  I'm sure there could be a workaround with a key ala PC games, but of course with that comes the open door for piracy.  Looks like I may be entering the digital age, then, just for the sake of convenience.  Besides, half the time I lend games to friends they often don't come back.

None of the systems let you do what you're asking in your original post.  The other systems you can install the game on the hard drive and play it from there, but you still need the disc in the system.  Otherwise, everyone would just go out and rent the games, install them to their hard drive and no one would ever buy any.

Stop hating and start playing.

There will be a future update that we can install the game on the hard dive but we still need the game in the console just like the 360 does it. I hread this.
