Wii U sells 40k units in the UK in its opening weekend

Nintendo’s Wii U console sold around 40,000 units in its first 48 hours on sale in the UK, MCV understands.

Retail sources suggest that effectively amounts to a complete sellout on the UK High Street. Stock is continuing to filter through to retail at a trickle but abundant supplies are not expected until the New Year.

Undoubtedly sales could have been considerably higher had stocks have been more plentiful.

Furthermore, MCV understands that the console has enjoyed a software attach rate in excess of 2:1.

The figures were arrived at through a combination of feedback from retailers and software sales data passed on by trade sources. Using this MCV was able to extrapolate estimated sales based on the previously confirmed Wii U bundle market shares.

UPDATE: These numbers exclude digital software sales from Nintendo's eShop.

ahh ok so the 50k at launch i read a month before launch could be really true.

maybe nintendo had really problems to produce enough consoles, they had that fire in the factory and said it won't change anything but who knows.

what do people expect we are only an ickle country,50-60 thousand for the week sounds fine to me for the loyalists, prices and deals are heading our way fast for the holiday season

                                                                                                                                        Above & Beyond

So, Nintendo bombed so hard they can't sell all the WiiU units they didn't ship?

"Retail sources suggest that effectively amounts to a complete sellout on the UK High Street."

Damn, stock issues after a measly 40k sold? They didn't ship a lot then did they?

So the Wii U sold 40k units in UK in the first 48 hours and people think its a flop? UK is England alone not Europe and lets wait till the end of the week to get the full week's numbers so we can all come to a fair conclusion of how its doing.

Nintendo only shipping 50,000 to the UK on launch day actually sounds about right when you think of the North American launch ...

The UK has (about) 1/5 the population of the USA, Nintendo (probably) shipped about 200,000 to 300,000 on launch day and followed with another sipment later in the week in the United States, and that would mean that per-capita the UK got a similar number of systems on launch day.

UK launch reference:

wii: 105k
ps3: 165k
psp: 185k
ds: 87k
3ds: 113k
vita "~ a quarter of psp launch numbers"
Wii U: 40k

Meh numbers for launch in UK but there is supply issues.

Anyway the ShopTo have all Wii U version in stock.

Wait, didn't Wii U launch on the 30th in the United Kingdom? How do they have full week figures?

Correct, but it was sold out almost everywhere in that time.

So, the UK was only provided with 40,000 units?

Wow that's terrible, looks like nintendo are in for some tough times.
