Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Kart Wii: Undeserving sales

someone doesn't know how the market works. There is no such thing as deserved and undeserved sales. I could maybe see how at the launch of a game that you could trick people into buying it at launch because of reputation or marketing, but MKwii has huge sales years after release without even dropping the price. People buy it because they like it, and i they aren't reselling it that's why the used price is still so strong despite 30 million copies out there. There is no real market measure where you could say it is undeserving.

I don't know how innovative MKWii is, but it sure is fun as all hell.

The game brought a new control scheme to the series, introduced online play and retro courses for console iterations, is about as accessible a modern racing game as was ever created, has high production values, and is part of a widely recognized brand. Plus, its the only game in the series on the Wii, meaning it doesn't compete with its own yearly iterations. Its success is reasonable.

Love and tolerate.

There are no "deserved sales" or "undeserved sales". Sales are what they are: a measure of appeal. Nothing more and nothing less.

I get that you're bothered by the idea that Mario Kart Wii has a higher appeal than the console iterations of any Call of Duty, but you shouldn't be. It doesn't matter.

I can't stand yearly interations of COD and think it's a cancer on the gaming industry as a hole. And yes sales can be deserved and undeserved based on quality of the game.

ok but basically sums up the whole thread.  You have your selfish opinion about what quality is and you want to force it on everyone.  Most gamers disagree with you, hence the sales of the games.  You can't even argue that people are somehow fooled in the case of COD and mario Kart, they know exactly what they are getting and they love it.

Before I start, I'm sure you'll think, "Of course Ps3-sales would say that, he is Sony biased".

With that out of the way, let me explain my unbiased opinion.

Mario Kart Wii is currently at a comfortable 32.66 million units. Let that sink it for a bit.
I've put a good 30 hours in the Wii version of MK (hundreds of hours into MK64/SNES) and my overall impression was, is this game innovating at all??? It was released in 2008. That's 3 years after the 360, and 2 after the Ps3 and Wii. Sony and Microsoft had already gotten their online communities thriving while Nintendo really had nobody playing online at all on a consistant basis. Say all you want but I doubt many were willing to deal with friend codes.

With that said, how is MKWii different from others in the series? I don't get it.

What I do get, is how it could still sell a good amount. It is a very accesible and fun game to play. Very enjoyable with friends. I'm not going to get into graphics.... but you get the idea, there are many positives about the game.

But COME ON. 32.66 million? MILLIONZ??? Maybe the Wii just has that many casuals in the young crowd picking up Mario Kart. Other than that, 33 million and counting completely boggles my mind.

It sells way more than your preferred games so you passive-aggresively attack it?

Great job, sport!

Any game that Nintendo sell that bundles with plastics or sort don't count. That includes WiiFit, since, that bundles with a giant bathroom scale.

ill admit i am quite salty about MK getting those sales when modnation racers deserves much more but what can yah do xD

That's what I'm saying. It's a shame knowing that Nintendo hogs all of the casual crowd away from Microsoft and Sony. :(

This comment pretty much explains it all. Kart games don't sell well on Ps3 and 360 because they are considered casual games. (which means in other words 2nd tier games)

The Wii owner just sees mario kart as an awesome multiplayer game, as one of the main reasons to buy the console.

I agree. Mario Kart 7 is a far superior game, but has yet to even hit 7 million sold.

True but the 3DS user base is still small compared to the Wii one. Also, I think the main reason people buy mario kart is forlocal multiplayer. On an handled console you have to own multiple consoles for local multiplayer and that is a limit. This explains also why Mario Kart has sold more copies on Wii than on the more popular NDS.

btw. Yes Kart 7 is a superior game.
