Forums - Sales Discussion - 3DS surpasses Gamecube lifetime sales

Saw this over on NeoGaf

In less than two years the Nintendo 3DS has surpassed lifetime sales of the GameCube, 2/3 of the N64 and nearly half of SNES. Interesting...

For reference, it took the 3DS around twenty months while the Wii did it in around sixteen months (but the Wii had two holiday seasons compared to one and a half for the 3DS). That should put LTD worldwide sales for the 3DS at somewhere around 22 million.

GC is the best hardware ever designed, too bad its look was a disaster, it didnt appeal to the masses

It's amazing to think of how little of a sales impact the GCN and Xbox had. Especially compared to this generation, where even the 3rd place console has tripled the GameCube's total sales.

Great little console though. *salutes*

Well a lot of that has to do with a longer cycle but even if it was the same cycle they still would have been outsold.  I loved my GC.  One of my favorite consoles.

Full steam ahead!

Why are we comparing 3DS performance with Gamecube? You really should be comparing the 3DS with other handhelds like the Gameboy or GB Advance. If not comparing exact sales, then look the sales at the current time in the life of the handheld for both. And do the same for the Gamecube vs Wii U.

Is this a good or a bad thing?

I have to admit though, the GC was a great console!

To those who loved the GC... I drink to thee.

OT: Great news for 3DS; 25m+ by year's end.

Weird symmetry in that the Vita will never pass the Dreamcast sales.

This really tells you just how hard the Gamecube had it.
