Okay, how about this: it takes the Wii's guts and, instead of putting them behind the disc drive, spreads them underneath, so the system is a bit taller/wider while being only 2/3 as long? This could still cut down on overall volume/mass.

yeah maybe, i'm sure there is some room to be had but it doesn't seem like there could be much. not enough to call it the mini wii at least. maybe they'll just stealthily release a redesign that is slightly smaller, cheaper to make, cheaper to ship. i dunno.
I doubt a Mini Wii will happen. It seems counter-intuitive to what Nintendo usually does. They have a tendency to kill off their old machines, as they're the biggest competition for their new machines. They stop fronting their own machines in order to ensure the success of the next ones.
But again, Black & White 2 released on the DS after the 3DS launched, and Nintendo might be changing their strategy, so you never know.

Don't... Don't even get me started on the fact that the Black & White 2 wasn't designed for the 3DS. HUGE missed opportunity here.
And I honestly think the Mini Wii is a bad idea which will confuse potential consumers. FFS, casuals still don't understand that 3DS and DS are different systems. . .
I would honestly be baffled if this rumor turns out to be true. If a company has already vowed to stop developing software for the system why would they release a re-design so instantly, especially when their new console's just arrived? Unless this is an attempt to squeese Wii past the 100m mark there's no real reason for it.

Nintendo knows how to make their consoles indistinguishable from each other lol.
