Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft's Phil Harrison: "We're no longer just competing with console companies"

I think he meant to say is that MS wants more of the casual audience and doesn't care as much about the hardcore gamer anymore. I mean what company would most sales come from casual consumers, not the internet nerds typing in forums every single day.

This is why I've been playing more and more on my PC the last few years, and why I have no intentions of picking up Microsoft's or Sony's next console.

Well... I might get Sony's, but it's very unlikely.

^ Pretty much. Microsoft and Sony consoles feels like its not even needed if you ask me.

Pretty much... The casual fanbase is much much bigger...

Also with Kinect and those Sports tittles they could sell to the hundred milions (bilions?) of obese/overweight around the World.

Believe it or Not i know from ALOT of people who bought Wii just for Fitness because they were out of shape...

Guess what ? They still out of shape. LOL

People should know that Cardio and Lift is the best way to get Fit not videogames... But hey this is the World we Live and Kinect has sold 20m, Wii 100m and most for people like these.

I'm pretty sure you can get a cardio workout from an exercise "video" game.  I belive the Nike + for Xbox 360 and Kinect does this.  I'm pretty sure I even read about a professional athlete who gave it his endorsement of approval.  Not as a paid endorsement, but his personal opinion of the product.

So, no.  The Wii Fit might not really rise to the level of a cardio workout, but I wouldn't suggest Kinect isn't capable of helping to provide one.

The title is out of context Nsanity.  If you're going to paraphrase, don't use quotes.

They're not saying they're not competing in the video game console space, that they're taking any type of gamer for granted, or that they don't care about gaming or developing new games.  He's saying the company has a broad context in which it a developing content.  It's not longer looking to create content usable only in one niche market (consoles, mobiles, tablets, PCs, etc), but across a spectrum of devices.  So instead of buying music that only works on the game console, you have music you can use anywhere.  On your PC, on your mobile, on your console, or on your tablet.  Anywhere.

So a game isn't simply thought of in the context of does this work well for the PC, but can it work on the PC, tablet, mobile, or console?  If an application is developed for the tablet or PC, will it also be good for the console or mobile device?

It doesn't mean Microsoft isn't focused on gaming or gamers, but at a higher level their focus is spread in a broad spectrum of devices that they want to provide a consistent experience across.

Do you listen to Major Nelson Radio?

Eric Neustadter has been using it to keep in shape and periodically he provides updates.  Basically his last update was it was "Kicking my butt.", if memory serves me correctly.  This was from a guy who, despite being a bit paunchy, still regularly gets a lot of exercise.

I believe Laura Massey, another co-host on the show, has been using it but not quite as extensively as Eric has.

From my best impression, it's geared toward someone serious about getting a good workout.  You don't say "This is fun!" or "This is easy!" when you're finished with the workout.  I think for someone who hasn't worked out in a while it's more along the lines of "Dear mother of God what is this Hell I've put myself through?"
