Yes, you can install and play games off of an external USB HDD. There appears to be an issue with certain USB 3.0 HDDs, so your best bet is using a USB 2.0 HDD or going off of Nintendo's support site for recommended HDDs (although it is currently pitifully lacking).

Surely it must be possible, otherwise the hard drive will run out of space very quickly

can you use the install like the xbox so you can install the whole game to the hdd or like the ps3 one where the devs decide if you are allowed to install and what to install (eg not the whole game, but only parts of it)

Can't seem to find any information online. I'll confirm this for you once I set up my HDD (if no one else can confirm before then).

Yes.

I've said for multiple years... all new consoles by the end of 2013. I was right.

I lost a bet to Jay520. He correctly predicted that neXtBox will not release within 2012. I should have known that Jay520 was an excellent predictor, I was foolish to bet against him. (June7)

To be clear, these articles are talking about installing downloadable versions of games to the hard drive. You cannot, to my knowledge, install disc-based games like you can on the 360.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Though that may be offered as an option down the road (disc-to-hd installs). Yeah one the hard drive is set up the system by default loads and installs all software to the hd.
