Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So you can actually store and run Wii U games from an SD card.

This isn't about the SD Card slot, it's about the USB slot. You guys are confused because the previous press article mentioned that the SD slot was not meant to play WiiU games afair.

But in OP, the SD card is placed in a USB adapter, and needs to be formatted just like an EHD. You can't put PCfiles on it, just like an EHD, unless it's partitioned.

I didn't watch the video tbh, I used up my BW for this month already XD

So the guy in the video just put his SD card in a USB adapter? Meh, then.

Pretty much. Same constraints as for EHD (needs to be formatted).

Yea, I approached it the wrong way with my response.  This could be a nice addition for someone that is going to just buy eshop games (not retail Wii U games on eshop) but the smaller ones.  If you are going to download full retail Wii U games then you might as well go with an external USB drive.

I wonder if this could cut down loading times compared to an HDD. I mean I know that SSD's load faster but would the USB 2.0 bottleneck this advantage? I also like that SD cards don't make any sound and use way less power. I can't afford a real SSD drive yet so I think this is a neat way to expand the storage space by 16 or 32 GB for cheap.

I believe the USB 2.0 will be a bottleneck as it has a transfer rate of 48MB/s. SSD I think is around 500MB/s but don't quote me on that.

Speed is important so make sure you get a Class 10 SDHC card or one with an x-rating of 100. However saying this, I have had class 6 cards outperform class 10.

That's why you should get one from a reputable manufacturer. A class 6 card from SanDisk usually outperforms class 10 cards from most other manufacturers.

Trust me, there are cards that claim all kinds of specs but in real life get no where close to the speeds they claim.

Crappy cards also cost me some damn good action photos in the past.
