I understand that. Did the console come with the OS preloaded or was that the download/update? Thats what im questioning.

The OS is already there. What you are downloading are all the online type functions plus Wii B/C.

OS is almost certainly pre-loaded. I don't think a company would be so incompetent to not include an OS with their console. Besides, you still have some forms to faciltate that download and what happens to those without internet connections (not sure, don't have Wii U).

So, then you really only have 2-3GB left after the launch day patch/update? |
Apparently that 5 gig update does not not count against the 8 or 32 GB of storage.

No, it's 882 MB. You've seen enough of my posts to know I wouldn't give such a specific number unless I had a reason to say it.
Why not ask Richard Leadbetter how big he thinks it is?

I can only go by what I see. Every news story I've seen about it has said 4.7 - 5 gigs, you're the only person that has said 882. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I'm not sure if you're right.
My Wii U system update failed at the 75% mark so I decided to look around the system and play Nintendoland ...
The OS was installed but most of the functionality was locked out until you installed your system update. Nintendoland worked well and when I was done the system update had completed downloading in the background and began installing.
I could be wrong but I suspect that the online services were not done when Nintendo began manufacturing the system so they locked down everything that used it.

"Eurogamer tech expert Rich Leadbetter informs us that the update is 1GB, not 5GB as was originally reported."

"Wii U's first system software update weighs in at around 1GB"

And while Richard rounds the total to about 1 GB in the articles above, I can state that it's 882 MB specifically.

That's much better, thank you.

No problem.
It just really makes you wonder how the 5 GB figure was first calculated and why it was taken as gospel by ever single media outlet (well, one of them didn't...*wink*)?
