4, pretty sure a hub would work too, I know for a fact that my 4 port mini USB hub worked fine on my Wii

Was this ethernet dongle thing ever an issue?

Wait, let me rephrase: Was it ever an honest problem?

For competitive gamers of certain genres running wired is a must.  Racers it isn't really a problem with, is mainly shooters where it matters.  Wireless connections are the bane of shooter games.  In racers when connection drops behind a bit games tend to predict where you would be, for a racer this is easy to get right since you'll probably be right ahead of where you just were, for shooters though you could be firing, aiming one place, turning, moving etc etc all at once, impossible to predict.

Not to mention people assume that their wireless/wired differences are the same everywhere else in the world. There are still millions with DSL. That's horribad speeds on top of terrible ping. (difference between my wireless and wired set-up is only about 50ms thankfully, but it's about 90ms in my living room where my PS3 and Wii are).

man I wish I knew where my old one was since this WiiU update is taking a lot longer than I thought.

How big is the update?

882 MB.

How the hell is the update so small, yet it took so long for everyone to download? Were Nintendo's servers just super slow today due to all the people accessing the download? If so, it'll suck downloading new updates every time they're released. =/

My internet speed is roughly 35Mbps, and actual download speeds (from Steam) are around 3.5MBps. It shouldn't have taken me longer than 5 minutes, yet it took about 40 minutes...

I assume it was mainly the servers being overloaded by everyone trying to update at the same time.  Future patches will probably download a lot faster than launch day 1 patch due to people downloading it at a more spread out time.  It took me about 45 mins to download and install mine if I had to guess.  I only have a 20 Mbps connection.

The combination of Nintendo not anticipating so many midnight downloads coupled with what seemed to be server throttling produced some very slow connections.

Won't be an issue going forward.  You could say the US midnight launch was a beta test for the rest of the world.

Are you talking about the day one update?  It was 5 freaking gigs, more than half of the basic Wii U's storage.

So, then you really only have 2-3GB left after the launch day patch/update?

I dont know where the 882mb is coming from. Iwata explained that the 32GB will have 29GB  available (for formatting purposes of course). My wii U currently have 25GB available after that update and me not installing anything.

This thread's title made me smile :p

My 32 GB says it has 25 GB left on it and I only played NintendoLand (created save file) and downloaded the patch when I checked at that time.  I wonder if they seperate the 512 MB space dedicated just to the Wii menu (Wiiware/VC games) from the Wii U storage space.  That only would account for .5 GB though.  I've just done the Wii to Wii U system transfer so I will see if this made it go lower or if just affected the Wii system memory on the Wii U.

edit - checked memory and still says 25 GB after Wii to Wii U transfer.  I transfered almost 500 MB (Wii Memory was almost full) so 512MB is set aside for the Wii menu inside the Wii U.

Iwata's video was explaining the difference in 2 base and 10 base number formats.    It had nothing to do with the update.
