"- In Data Management, you must format the connected media drive. Note that this means you cannot use the drive with a PC"

What!? Maybe I read that wrong, am I only allowed to use the external HDD with my Wii U? I can't use the same external HDD on my PC!?

No.

This is likely a combination of Nintendo having their own storage formatting system (think NTFS and FAT32) which simply makes it unreadable by a PC that doesn't understand the formatting and a piracy prevention measure so you don't upload your games online.

PS3 does the same thing for the internal HDD.

Ok, so as long I don't download any pirated games I can still storage music, school projects and other stuff on my external HDD?

My point being that if hackers (who are backfiguring everything) can add those kinds of features that nintendo neglected to on the old hardware, the only reason Nintendo didn't add the desired WiiU features is because they didn't want to.

Hackers will always try to hack, but leaving out no brainer features like wii software on the handheld screen just pushes them even harder.

Right.  They didn't want to.  Like how they don't have plans for a Wii U VC at all, right?

I mean I'll just take your word for it and believe Nintendo didn't want to add GamePad functionality for Virtual Console games.  You know, despite Iwata saying they wanted to do that but couldn't (because of the sandbox system) and that they have a Wii U VC already in the works which wouldn't be limited to the Wii's sandbox system.

Look at what you just said regarding the Wii itself.  They still having figured out how to get Wii remotes to work on GC games yet and it's been out for 6 years.   Do you honestly believe that with a vastly increased security system that they'll enable GamePad usage before Nintendo initiates their Wii U VC?

You can but you'd need to partition a section of that HDD for that purpose.    If you formatted the entire HDD with Nintendo's file system, your PC wouldn't know what to do with it when you plugged it in.   If you ahve an NTFS partition on it first though, it could access that portion.

Its not just the VC titles, but anything that runs in Wii mode, wii software included.  And yes, I'm saying that the only reason Nintendo didn't do is because they didn't want to.  It has absolutely nothing to do with hardware.  The hardware is more than capable.  Nintendo just didn't want to take the time to make it work, for one reason or another.

And you'll probably be re-buying all those VC titles on the WiiU VC.  It would be nice if they just upgraded you for free, but the cynic in me doesn't see this happening.

Ok then, there is no problem with that. I was afraid that I will need to buy another external HDD, since the one I'm using right now (1 TB) is mostly for music and school projects, and I was planning to use the same HDD for my Wii U games.

Do you use your PS3 or Xbox 360 hard drive with your pc?

Stop hating and start playing.

Don't have a PS3 nor a 360, so I honestly don't know the process. Viper1 already said that if I want to use the same external HDD I just need to partition a section of the HDD, which I'm ok with that.

I'm not talking about hardware, I'm talking about a software sandbox.  Think of it this way, can you run a virtualization OS and make changes to the host OS with it?   No.  Nor would you want it to do that.

But you seem to prefer the stick to the idea that Nintendo just hates you and everyone else and wants to screw you over rather than do any actual research on what sandboxing actually means so we'll be ending this debate now.

Except that Nintendo MADE the sandbox.  They have complete control over what the sandbox allows and what it doesn't allow, and they chose to not allow this feature.  So now, likely, the only way to get this feature is to break out of their sandbox or make our own sandbox.  See DIOS MIOS for breaking out of the GC sandbox, and Devolution for making our own sandbox in the Wii scene.

@bold: Actually, depending on what disks you give the virtualized sandbox access to, it can and will be able to access and modify the host OS.
