Is this the first time since 2009 PS3 gets in the lead?

No. PS3 was also in the lead throughout last year. It even ended up winning(according to VgChartz data)
This year the PS3 lead pre-holidays is even bigger. There is only 1 big bundle this year for 360 and that is Halo 4.(Last year they had Modern Warfare 3 and gears 3)

PS3 will easily win the year in both VgChartz data and official shipment numbers.

But it won't take 2nd. 360 just has to hold out one more year :)

There is NO magical cut off point for when a console stops selling, it sells until the last console is purchased and that determines who finishes in what position.

Theres the window of relevance, A.K.A when the generation is the most recent one....when the spotlight is on you.

After the WiiU releases, we are technically into the next gen. 360 fans can technically say they won the HD console wars for the gen. But I personally am going to do this the fun way.....wait until all 3 have released next gen hardware before declaring any sort of victory.Thats the cut off point.

Because when the spotlight is off Wii/PS3/360 and shifts to WiiU/PS4/720, is it really worth celebrating any victory from last gen? Celebrating taking not 1st, but 2nd.......7 years after release.........and only when the next models have released.

You can celebrate that if you want, but that looks like lowered standards and a hollow victory at best. PS3 has exactly one year to achieve any kind of victory that matters.

No point celebrating a racing victory when the race allready ended. Your just running extra laps while the people allready left the stadium to watch the next race unfold

Hahaha what a joke of a post, pure hyperbole. The winner is the console that sells the most full stop, whether you like the fact or not.

Ok. If you want to celebrate lower standards and hollow victories then by all means.

The only hollow victory is the one setup by you with cherry picked joke parameters, pretending consoles sales start and end when 'you say so' instead of when they actually stop selling in the real world, it's beyond pathetic.

What's the sales lead for ps3 so far this year?
I have no doubt the 360 will sell more during the holidays but how much does it have to make up to take the year.

So far

PS3 7,489,241 (-47%) 67,996,976
X360 5,812,466 (-58%) 69,581,910

What was the difference last year between the PS3 and 360 for the last 9/10 weeks of the year?

It was around 9,085,235 for the PS3 and 7,455,771 for the X360. So oddly enough the difference was pretty much the exact same as this years numbers.

Same difference but ugh sales have tanked. With the WiiU stealing the spotlight this holiday it seems the HD twins are going to disappoint this year. There better be some good deals.

Think of it this way, the PS3 will still be in the race because it still has gas while the others broke down. Wii is already getting lapped.
Meanwhile the PS3s younger brother, the PS4 will start the race with the 720.

When the PS3 takes 2nd place, I will celebrate. It'll just be a small party though.

I just see a generation ending being different then a console selling afterwards.

PS2 sells to this day, but its generation ended in November 2005 with Xbox 360. That is my biggest point I can make here. PS3 can overtake 360, and that is casue for some celebration, but the generation itself will end this November with Wiiu.

No. Generation doesn't end until all 3 consoles are out the gate.(With Wii U, its like Nintendo officially started the countdown)
I think it all depends on sales. Once both PS3 and 360 are at current Wii-level sales, that's when we can call it.

Sorry to disappoint some Xbox fans, but there is no COD BO2 bundle in USA. Halo 4 is the only bundled game and I don't see how will this boost sales since any one who likes to play Halo already owned an xbox in the past 7 years.

This is a fail comment on so many levels and shows that you have no idea what your talking about.

How is it a failed comment?

Fact: No COD BO2 bundle for Xbox in USA

Fact: Most people who likes to play Halo already owns an Xbox

There is no doubt that Xbox will sell more this holiday in USA, but the difference wont be as big as people anticipate.

Fact: CoD games always move hardware even if their is no special bundle.

Fact: Halo always moves hardware when a new game comes out maybe except Halo Wars.

When this weeks Halo numbers come out we will see a sizeable jump thanks to Halo 4 and the same will happen with Black Ops 2 the following week.

But with no special bundle CoD 360 will move about at many units as CoD PS3, so in terms of sales comparisons they would cancel each other out. 360 will sell more because of the USA thing, but not huge amounts more. I think perhaps the carryover Halo 4 effect and BO2 combined will mean a relatively steady sales rate. So 360:PS3 Halo week should be similar to 360:PS3 BO2 week.

I never said it was going to be a huge spike in sales nor did i say 360 would sell more than PS3 this comming week. I just said both Halo and CoD move hardware regardless if their is a special console edition or not. I understand without the special console the sales aren't going to be as high as with a console.

My favorite 2 months of the year and my favourite thread every year! :D

Next week is Halo 4 bundles. Week after is Cod bundles. Then Black Friday?

Just gonna sit back with a smile on my face.

I know its hard for you to see PS3 leading every week of the year until these period comes :P

Truly it is. But when in doubt I look at the Vgchartz homepage and see that glorious bar graph. And all becomes right in the world

You're the kind of guy that would root for the nazis in Shindler's List.

PS gives the gamers everything a company should with high quality, abundant exclusives, free online, and an incredible subscription service that pays you back tenfold.  Yet you act like them losing is just so wonderful.  I want all 3 companies to be successful, but I want the company offering better stuff to be rewarded with sales.  360 had Halo 4, which is incredible, but it's just wrong for them to trick consumers into thinking that that 4gb model is really the cheapest HD console when you're going to have to get an HDD and pay for online.  I realize this is the people's fault for being uninformed and I don't blame microsoft, but still it would be nice to see Sony get rewarded for all these amazing exclusives.  Also I would remind you that 360 is only ahead because of that year head start and RROD replacements.

I think both are going to have an abysmal holiday.

What? Consoles have only gotten more holiday-centric. Specially XBox 360. It had its best holiday ever last year did it not?
