Is this the first time since 2009 PS3 gets in the lead?

No. PS3 was also in the lead throughout last year. It even ended up winning(according to VgChartz data)
This year the PS3 lead pre-holidays is even bigger. There is only 1 big bundle this year for 360 and that is Halo 4.(Last year they had Modern Warfare 3 and gears 3)

PS3 will easily win the year in both VgChartz data and official shipment numbers.

But it won't take 2nd. 360 just has to hold out one more year :)

There is NO magical cut off point for when a console stops selling, it sells until the last console is purchased and that determines who finishes in what position.

Theres the window of relevance, A.K.A when the generation is the most recent one....when the spotlight is on you.

After the WiiU releases, we are technically into the next gen. 360 fans can technically say they won the HD console wars for the gen. But I personally am going to do this the fun way.....wait until all 3 have released next gen hardware before declaring any sort of victory.Thats the cut off point.

Because when the spotlight is off Wii/PS3/360 and shifts to WiiU/PS4/720, is it really worth celebrating any victory from last gen? Celebrating taking not 1st, but 2nd.......7 years after release.........and only when the next models have released.

You can celebrate that if you want, but that looks like lowered standards and a hollow victory at best. PS3 has exactly one year to achieve any kind of victory that matters.

No point celebrating a racing victory when the race allready ended. Your just running extra laps while the people allready left the stadium to watch the next race unfold

Think of it this way, the PS3 will still be in the race because it still has gas while the others broke down. Wii is already getting lapped.
Meanwhile the PS3s younger brother, the PS4 will start the race with the 720.

When the PS3 takes 2nd place, I will celebrate. It'll just be a small party though.

I just see a generation ending being different then a console selling afterwards.

PS2 sells to this day, but its generation ended in November 2005 with Xbox 360. That is my biggest point I can make here. PS3 can overtake 360, and that is casue for some celebration, but the generation itself will end this November with Wiiu.

No. Generation doesn't end until all 3 consoles are out the gate.(With Wii U, its like Nintendo officially started the countdown)
I think it all depends on sales. Once both PS3 and 360 are at current Wii-level sales, that's when we can call it.
