From my experience, the typical stance of the average hardcore gamer is this:

"I would try out some Nintendo games, if they went third party and made games for systems I actually like."

So the answer to the OP's question is "no".

That...isn't a bad assumption actually. There are plenty of gamers who just don't like Nintendo's hardware decisions, especially this gen considering the Wii's approach. It is a shame the gamecube didn't sell more. For some gamers, it is hard to buy a piece of hardware they don't like. Afterall, it is the most expensive part and must be used in order to play the software. I really like Zelda but it is hard spending a large sum of money on the hardware when its only good use for me is playing games, especially when there are excellent hardware alternatives with their own large selection of games.

For instance if Wii was more like the Wii U when it came out (obviously not as graphically capable or with a streaming screen controller) it would have been a much more attractive offering. In fact, my brother might have maintained his dedication to the system and I would have had a much better chance of picking up Nintendo first this gen. Nintendo could have done it at the $300-$400 and maintained better 3rd party relations as well as more capable online offerings.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Who else could have bought all those consoles? There aren't even any casual games on it yet.

I don't think they're stealing much of the PS3 / 360 / PC crowd, the games are still very Nintendo focused. The 3DS still has quite a few hardcore gamers, but mainly in the form of Nintendo fans.

Hardcore Nintendo fans?

Get the fuck outta here with your crazy words

O rly?

Yes, of course they have. They are devices aimed at the same market and im sure many people only buy one and have a decision to make/made.

No doubt, despite what some posters here are wrongly telling you, that Sony has lost customers to the 3DS. Games like Resident evil revelations, Tales of the abyss, SSF43D, Kingdom Hearts 3D prove that there is a hardcore market in the 3DS. Its not as big as it is on the home consoles but its definitly there and its sizeable enough to be atractive given the lower development costs.
Despite that, yes Nintendo games obviously still sell the most. I personally have a 3DS and have only bought Zelda OOT3D from nintendo cause of the special edition 3DS that came bundled with it.

With games like Fire emblem, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Bravely default, SMT4, Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest VII... a hardcore would be crazy not to go for the 3DS instead of the Vita.

No, but its a step forward towards it

The hardcore rather like to pretend that they don't even like Nintendo games while they replicate them in their LBP editors ;P

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

I don't think Nintendo has picked up any more hardcore gamers with the 3DS then it has with the DS before it, but I think in the coming year it might. Monster Hunter has basically migrated to the 3DS and that will convert a lot of Japanese gamers. If Nintendo can develop/publish more games like Fire Emblem, Tales of the Abyss, and Resident Evil, port games like Bravery Default, and maybe create/introduce new ops like they did on GBA (Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, etc) then Nintendo has a good chance at stealing the hardcore. Also with strong 3rd party support from Atlus (Shin Megami Tensei 4) and Capcom, Nintendo might just knock Sony out of the handheld market, or at least make them niche like Sony did to N64 and GCN.

Right now though, Nintendo isn't doing enough, had it not been for Altus and Capcom developing for Nintendo, Sony may have been able to get a good hold on the Japanese market.

Well theres Mario Kart and Super Mario Land, but they're just the two best selling 3DS games. Lets also forget Nintendogs which is up there too.

In Japan? Yes. Elsewhere? No. Monster Hunter brought along a chuck of the "hardcore" to the 3DS. If you look at the total 3rd party sales on the 3DS they exceed that of the DS in Japan over the same period in it's lifetime, even when Nintendo's 1st party offerings lag behind.
