Forums - Sony Discussion - 360 degree gameplay for PS4

I suggested this on PlayStation Blog Share and am surprised it made it considering it involves the PS4. I am interested in what kind of discussion this will start. I personally find this an ideal form of advancing gameplay. Not only will it provide the best level of 3D possible, it will dramatically change the game and create almost total immersion. Like something you've never experienced before.

3D Personal Viewer 360 degree gameplay for PS4

Idea 63054 | Posted in Hardware by GT_168 | September 18, 2012

Using the 3D Viewer and Move, next gen gaming can allow you to be in the game. The viewer would allow gamers to look in any direction as if they were in the game, utilizing a camera for head tracking.

Essentially throwing sixaxis in the 3D personal viewer, along with a motion depth camera (playstation eye 2.0) your head will serve as the right analog stick in any first person game.

In a FPS for example, you could look left to see what is there. Using a move controller, navigator, and the sharpshooter; you can point your gun to what you are looking at and shoot it. Your character will still be facing forward just like you are in real life. The new camera would allow you control your character placement in the game with your actual body. Turn your body left, your character will do the same thanks to motion tracking. Using the move, you could see your weapon in hand in the game where you hold it in real life.

Worried you might fall over or run into something? Sit in a rotating chair or just use a dualshock controller, you will still be able to look around with your head though as if you had two right analog sticks just without the need to spin around.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Wouldn't that be really expensive? that baby is like 800 dollars..

anyway i don't think you should be tracking movement.. keep that on a stick..
noway you want to move left and right using your body in games like CoD..

They should do something with augmentend reality looking at a screen..
like the HUD for a plane on a screen displaying the sky

or make a Spaceballs videogame..

That's the 5th tester they've lost to spinal cord injuries.

Damn that looks like video game hell.

Yes the 3D viewer is $800. Good price for a 3D TV that is going to give you a virtual 750" screen. If you watch stuff alone that is.

I would imagine Sony would be able to reduce the cost of the device dramitcally in order to hit a reasonable price point. Mass production would factor in but also the tech inside of it might have gone down since it was created. There are probably a variety of tweeks they can make as well. Still probably expensive but it wouldn't be a required device. The PS4 would work on any display screen, but if Sony is considering a Kinect style camera for move they should look into offering control outputs to utilize this concept. It would be an amazing experience.

As I said, the body position movement would be optional. You could easily use a dualshock, sit down, and still be able to take advantage of left and right head movements. You just wouldn't have the abilty to aim your gun left and right without moving your character with an analog stick. Still highly immersive...then again just using the 3D viewer as is is already impressive.

isnt that what the wiiu is doing now anyway? except with the controller screen instead of head gear.

It def is interesting though. My onyl concern is having little tv screens so close to my eyeballs as my eyes are bad enough as it is already haha.

I can't say the effects on eyesight this device has, but owning one is a strong desire of mine.

What I describe is not that similar to what the Wii U is doing. The Wii U is utilizing motion controls, gyros, in the gamepad to allow for 360 degree view, but the output it is using it on doesn't allow it to do what I described in the least. It could be attempted but it would limit your movement and view to how you position the controller in front of you. It wouldn't allow you to turn your head as your means of view, only to stifly turn the controller fixed how you are facing, or I suppose you could attempt to turn it with your head movement but then there wouldn't be a way to interact with how your character is facing as it wouldn't provide a constant point of view and ultimetly it would be cumbersome and tedious. Besides, it destroys the feature of asynchronous gamplay.

What I describe would be more like a FP/FPS simulator. The only thing missing would be you actually having to walk/run in real life. The use of gyros is important in both, but relying on that entirely wouldn't provide enough accuracy, while adding a motion camera similar to the kinect could reduce lag as well as help prevent sync issues. Allowing the game to be fluid.

They already did that on the PSN game Datura, you can play with the move and pair Sony 3D glasses to play like you're in the game... But the glasses cost like 600$ or something.

But I like this, definitely. I think Oculus Rift is gonna set a new spark on this field and I personally believe Nintendo is reworking a new version of Virtual Boy.

The virtual boy 20 years ahead of it's time, lol.

So basically they have made their own oculus rift

Virtual Boy didn't track movement to immerse you on a 3D space.

It was just... screens in yours eyes.

This idea came to mind shortly after the 3D personal viewer was displayed in Japan, before the device received its proper name. I discussed it a little in the thread about Microsoft's projector style kinect concept as a means of providing a better implementation of what that kinect concept was trying to create.

I find it odd that PS Blog Share accepted this idea but screened out the idea I had to integrate a PlayStation gamer social network in the PS4 which would take advantage of PSN accounts and provide avenues for communication and organization for those who use the console. I honestly don't recall seeing any PS4 ideas make it on PS Blog Share, is so they are rare.
