Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii content can't be played on the GamePad?

Nintendo has confirmed that all Wii digital content won’t make use of the GamePad. That means you won’t be able to play Virtual Console (or WiiWare) titles on the controller.

Damn, I was looking forward to replaying VC and WiiWare games on the Gamepad.
Must be a BC issue, but the Wii games can do it, right? No excuse!

UPDATE: Original quote

Wii, WiiWare, and Virtual Console games will be supported on Wii U much the same way that GameCube titles were supported on Wii, without any special features or GamePad support.

In an interview with Nintendo of America, they stated that the Virtual Console transfer process was not confirmed to be available at launch, and would require both systems to be present and an SD card. The transfer process works much in the same way the DSi to 3DS process works today.

Reading the original source.. it says that Wii retail games won't support Gamepad either?? huh? I thought it was already confirmed?!
*Changes title from Wii digital only to Wii in general*

I'm not sure if "Gamepad support" implies that there will be nothing extra you can do on the gamepad with the wii games? Or does it really mean you can't put it on the gamepad? Because it makes no sense to me why you wouldn't be able to put the game on the gamepad, when you can do literally everything else.

RAGE!
CANCELLING MY WiiU PRE-ORDER THAT I HADN'T PRE-ORDERED.

I'm sure they will release an update for it to support the games. I mean how hard could it be?

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

This is actually a deal breaker to me... I was totally looking forward to this. I never expected them to let me play Wii games on the Gamepad but last year they gave Virtual Consoles games as an example of how to use your Gamepad. This is really stupid... why Nintendo?

Can you not play games on the screen or will you not be able to use it as a controller for the games?

This is the Game of Thrones

Where you either win

or you DIE

Meh, the thought of doing this never even struck me until now. When I play Virtual Console games, I prefer the big screen.

Also, WiiWare titles usually support motion controls, right? Would you want to lie in bed with the Wii U pad between your knees and Wii remote/nunchuck in your hands? :P

:O

First a quote from the article's author:

I really hope this particular representative was smoking crack here.

If the system has to be in "wii mode" for Virtual Console that, to me, is like them admitting that it's a legacy service that won't be maintained. How on earth can I buy more games if this is the case.

I'm so disgusted. I was hyped for the system and I preordered, but if this is true, I may cancel and see how crap plays out. So upsetting.

[...]

Watch. While all the games we already bought can't be played on the Game Pad, we will be welcome to purchase the "Wii U Virtual Console" version and play those on the tablet....

Seriously though, this is so crazy that I really hope the representative fed us bad info, but we report it like we're told!

Bogus info?

It makes no sense... only if they wanted to sell "WiiU VC" with Gamepad support.

They meant play games on the screen, but if the Wii U does go into "Wii mode" when executing Wii content, then the wireless Gamepad is outside that BC restriction... just like Wii's GC (can't use the Classic controller) or 3DS DS (DS games still connect through WEP).

Off-screen gameplay is a feature of the WiiU. The Gamepad can easily act as a display and controller simultaneously. Playing classic controlled games such as Super Mario World, Dr. Mario Online Rx or Donkey Kong Country Returns could be possible with the Gamepad. All Virtual Console games could be played with the Gamepad's controls, even future GC titles.

They already stated this. When you play Wii games it goes into Wii mode(can't use Wii U features). Last I checked, Wii's can't use the Upad.

But the system also had an off-screen mode.
