It's going to flop. Just like LBP Karting.
Sony PR has spent years telling their fanbase how an Hardcore game should be: cinematic, realistic-looking, adult or epic and badass, heavy on storytelling.
At the same time they went on calling the competition childish or casual.
Now it will be hard for them to convince fans to buy a game without any of the mentioned qualities, that blatantly copies competiton.
Not to mention Smash Bros is just too good, those who have played it enough and love it, have probably just bought a Wii already to play it (since it's not very expansive). Those who don't know it or don't like it have no reason to be attracted to the game.

I do believe that LBP Karting will flop hard, but with Battle Royale I see that Sony is trying to push this game as their only big first-party title this holiday. So, even though it won't sell amazingly well, it will crawl to really decent numbers.

It's totally true that a childish and casual title is something different from what Sony has given us this generation, but I think that a lot of PS3 users need some title like that. And Battle Royale could be that game.

I don't know about you, but I haven't forgotten about all of the R&C games and LBP. This guy is acting like all Sony do is release realistic-type games. Not true at all.

It's not always been like that of course, but during the Ps3 era their focus is mostly on "hardcore" targeted games. R&C is just continuation the ps2 lagacy tergeted to the already ensatblished IP fanbase, they don't actually put that much of an effeort to market it. LBP is a more correct example but it's more like the exception to the rule.

To be clear that's not to say All-Star Battle should fail, I just say it's quite incoherent to the ps3 marketing proposition, so it will hardly be a succes.

Pretty sure this is not a "lets point out everything we hate about sony and how superior Nintendo is" thread.

Maybe I used wrong words but it wasn't my intention, to explain a bit better the second part of my post, I mean Smash Bros is one of those IPs which is very strong and can hardly be successfully reproduced. I could say the same thing about Halo for example, if someone really likes Halo has probably bought an Xbox, if you reproduce a very similar game on Ps3 or Wii, it won't have a great succes since the Halo audience is already on Xbox.

edit: An even better example would be Forza Motorsport, even tought critics agree the game is at least on par with GT, and even tought Microsoft has put a lot of effort to make it and to market it it's still very far from GT commercial success.

What kind of flop? We talking a Starhawk type flop or a Twisted Metal type flop?

Didn't both games flop horribly anyways?

Yeah they did, its what happens when you release a decent game but don't advertise it whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure PSAS pre-orders will pick up, I think week one you'll see decent sales, but it will have really good legs, this is a huge Christmas title, it could be like LBP :)

I really love R&C, not LBP,  and I haven't forgotten them, too. What freebs2 wanted to say (and I agree with him) is that everybody knows that Sony offers a big variety of games, but it's clear that during this generation their focus shifted to more cinematics and 'mature' games.

During this generation the only platform games on the PS3 were R&C and LBP...and nothing more. I think that Sony understood their wrong decision about this  and they are trying to recover with the new Sly and Battle Royale.

I do think it will be a success for the same reasons you used to say that it won't be a success.

We, PS3 players, need something fresh and casual. On the PS3 there's nothing like this and this hole will be filled with Battle Royale.

For New IPs, pre-orders usually correlate well with post-release sales, so yes.

Yes, it's a huge flop! It's blatantly obvious, MBP.

... Jk! We all know VGC has pretty bad Pre-Order tracking.

I'm not going to buy it simply because I'm getting a Wii U and I know SSB will be on it, that and I don't like the character representation of All Stars nearly as much as SSB, they lack a certain charm to them, I can't really explain it. Also want to see what kind of stuff they'll put on the 3DS with that SSB, it obviously won't be the same game as the Wii U version since they'd gimp the graphics but it's still interesting.

The original LittleBigPlanet had similar pre-order numbers and then went to be a success.
