Deus Ex Human Revolution has this problem. Using stealth to get through 4 hours of the game then you have to shoot your way through the bosses really bothered me.

Especially sucks the first time you run into a boss if you're playing on hard and have been going with a pure stealth build the whole time. :/

Good thing I had that tranq rifle, it was really useful against Barrett's arm gun and the three grenades he throws at once. Asshole.

If you want to be rude, you'd say Catherine is an example for this. Those dumb puzzle stages are thrown in while you play your novel story :P

I hate when games change physics when getting a sequel. So I'd hate a genre change in the same game even more. Luckily, this hasn't really happened to me yet or it was a fun addition.

I also got stuck on the same part in Dead Space. Not enjoyable at all. I hate those turret sections in pretty much all games. Sucked in Gears of wars, sucked in Killzone, sucked the worst in J&D 2 and 3.
The best way to ensure a game not getting a 2nd play through from me is to put in an unskippable turret section. Trade in guaranteed.

Generally sections that have different gameplay yet appear only once or twice in a game much after the beginning are a bad idea. Variety is good but it should play a more important part in the game, not just that one section. It's especially bad if you throw an odd part near the end of the game where it's sure not to fit the game.

MGS2 turned into a hack and slash in the last few chapters. As if forcing us to play as Raiden wasn't bad enough.

I beat that part!!

Anyway, it's not the rule but I prefer it when a game starts with a certain set of rules and then builds on those rules, giving you new abilities to add to the ones you already had OR when a game takes the rules it gave you in the beginning of the game but makes you use them in new and creative ways. Either way, don't ever just dump all of the mechanics and then the player into "Hard Mode" of a game they haven't even been playing.

I like variety but there's a way to do it.

For all of the hate that MGS4 gets, I think it's a game that does variety the right way. It feel like you're in direct control of everything and it impresses you but, at the same time, it never gets frustrating. Fighting Rex vs. Ray or Snake vs. Ocelot is awesome, not game breaking.

Wait what? MGS4 gets hate? Why? Old Snake was awesome.

There's also when God of War III turns into Guitar Hero. That was a bit weird and unsettling.

So....yeah.  Some douche actually talks badly about this game.  I'm sure he's done that on more than one occasion.
