Forums - Gaming Discussion - $99 Android console Ouya is a real thing

A new $99 Android game console Ouya that includes a dev kit and the rights to self publish has been announced.

This information comes from a posting on AngelList by a company called Ouya, as spotted by The Verge. According to the report, any developer can self publish on the system and all titles will be free to play. The hardware is "built to be hacked," according to the listing with development tools coming prepackaged. While the console is based around Android games, it still plugs into a TV.

The unique concept has some big star power behind it with One Laptop Per Child designer Yves Behar and ex vice-president of game publishing at Microsoft Ed Fries on board, while Julie Uhrman of IGN is leading the pack as founder and CEO of the company.

It's a very unique proposition and certainly sets itself apart from the crowd. Check out its peculiar design below.

No, it became the new Android media hub/amplifier called "Q" and is a sphere.

Only issue is they should have removed the stereo amplifier and reduced its price to $99.

ok. looks like I was wrong earlier.

I thought this was a Google made Android device and that is why I thought it was shelved and replaced by Q.

However.... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

Looks like its a real device from a completely separate group and its now looking for funds.

While this looks really good overall with a lot of potential, I still think it will be eclipsed by GoogleTV and overall Android's expansion into bigger gaming later this year/early next.

btw, the Q like any Android device can and still is a games machine. Play store has tons of games as well as fully working OnLive app that can even sync with their controller.

However, Q is intended to stream your phone/tablet's content... so to use OnLive on TV you really need a GoogleTV device.

All of the latest devices from (including Sony's) are listed as compatible with OnLive's controller.

Gamecube 2?
i see zero chances for this to succeed

i believe this are two different things. the thing i posted should be only for gaming and every game would be absolutely free to play with in game spots or so. with your device you could play android games or use onlive if i understood you correct? which you can buy for some dollars (or the free versions of it, sure). but no clue, maybe it is the same...

btw what you posted looks awesome! i really start to hate my slow internet when i see all these great things coming out now connecting all our devices to work together.

Nice so uh... Same Xbox controls?

Yay!!!

So is it basically a system that will run games similar to those in the android app store? I really don't see this creating much of a splash.

But where do the controllers plug in?

Yes, the could be two different devices. However, from what I read, they are one in the same. Who knows. All I want is a GoogleTV that has all this type of connectivity and feature set on my TV.
