Forums - Gaming Discussion - 2012 the year of gaming disapointments, or are gamers expectations too high?

Hello,

After reading the NPD results for May I thought about all of the games that had a lot of hype that failed to met expectations:

1) Mass Effect 3: This game was to b the Game of the Year for 2012, until gamers reached the controversial and underwhelming ending. This has led many to consider the game a disapointment

2) Future Soldier: THis game began to recieve a lot of hype as it had been in development for some time. What we got was a game that had an evidently troubled development and was very underwhelming. Overall the game was considered a disapointment

3) Max Payne 3: Many consider the game to be good, but overall sales and general perspective have it labelled as Rockstar's worst outing this generation

4) Diablo 3: Between the Errors at launch, hacking, broken systems, less customization and lower level cap, many are considering Diablo 3 to be a disapointment

5) Twisted Metal: Many expected this to be a huge reboot of the series. Instead we got a PSN title that had a forced single player integrated.

6) Syndicate: This cult classic recieved some hype but ended up being a collosal disapointment

7) Resident Evil: Racoon City: Many expected this to have the same polishing as the flagship RE titles. Slant 6 who is known to many less quality games made this is a difficult one to reccomend

8) Kinect Star Wars: What can be said about this that hasn't already. Many expected this to be an amazing star wars experience for Kinect and instead it was a game that responded poorly to the commands and played like a collection of mini games.

What do you guys think? Are gamers expectations too high or has this been the year of underwhelming & disapointing games? Here's hoping that AC3, GTA5, and many others live up to the hype!

I don't mean to go against what you've said here, but:

1) I haven't played it myself, but everyone I know who has said that they really enjoyed the game itself, just hated the ending/ last 10 minutes. I know there's been a huge uproar about it and it is a disappointment, but it seems to have been blown out of proportion.

3) Other than the fact that it strays a little far from the original Max Payne design, I haven't read that many complaints about this game?

5) Given the funding and time constraints, I don't know what people were expecting from this game. It's a let down, sure, but nothing too major.

6) I don't know why ANYONE had hopes for this game. A new Syndicate game was never going to be in line with the originals, everyone knew that as soon as EA acquired Bullfrog, let alone 17 years later with a new company at the helm, so I'm not sure why people were getting their hopes up.

7) Slant Six, does anything else need to have been said? Not sure why people would've got hyped about this, Resi 6 is the big one.

8) Were people expecting it to be an amazing Star Wars experience? Pretty much every preview I read demonstrated that it was just a collection of Kinect mini-games, why were people expecting more?

So perhaps there have been a lot of disappointing games, yes, but I don't think they've necessarily been 'underwhelming' because there shouldn't have been great expectations for them in the first place!

If those were all the most anticipated games, then I think gamers' expectations aren't high enough. If they had bought Binary Domain, Dragon's Dogma, and Gravity Rush like I did, they wouldn't be sitting around crying about how disappointed they are right now.

Yes, Gamer's expectations are way too high.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

The thing is for me is that this year is almost nothing, but sequals to good IPs of this Gen and previous gens. Have loved Mass 3 and enjoyed Max Payne 3, but I have also been enjoying tons of gems I missed from last year due to sweet games like sKYRIM, bATMAN, Uncharted 3, Portal 2 and Dead Space 3.

This year only has Halo 4 as a big hitter in my book and that series is really six games into the world from the the fps side at least. It is slightly banal, other greats like Black ops 2 and Ass Creed 3 get yearly versions and just do not excite. I could have a surprise, but the summer line up is worse then in years.

I think this is late in a gen and companies are going to take less gambles on IPs, but I want something fresh.

@ Badgenome Is Vita still around? I never knew.
