Forums - Sony Discussion - Discussing PS4 hardware and manufacturing price

I think its quite clear looking at the Vita, that the PS4, will be a very much off the shelf component design, its cheap, its low risk, developers love it, the only real question is will it be powerful enough to emulate the cell, I personally doubt it and thus no backwards compatibility again, but at least we will get PS2 back for sure, and lets face it thats the best generation to have as BC.

But im sure they will be working hard to get PS3 emulation, not so much for box products as those can be sold, but because people have built up a library of downloadable titles, and they will be pissed if they are unplayable and dead money.

There were a few rumours about Sony working with and possibly aquiring one of the streaming companies (Gaikai or OnLive). I suspect they could tailor that to compensate for backwards compatability.

Maybe they could even have a method to recognise a PS3 disc and stream the game from the net.

please forget about emulating the ps3 - it won't happen. at least with this generation. this would require sooo much more power than the ps3 that this is totally out of scope (and this only means emulating the cell - not to mention the gpu [which could be wrapped somehow possibly] - one major problem would also be the very high bandwidth the ps3 uses internally).

I will post what I have posted in a previous PS4 specs-thread (I've changed it slightly) but this time include my predicted price:

Hardware Specifications
Central Processing Unit (CPU) QC @ 3.4ghz (Not CELL)
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) HD 7850 2gb vram
Memory  4GB min (inc 2gb vram)
Storage Capacity 320gb/500gb

This can run BF3 on Ultra at 1080p + 60fps, considering it's a closed system that'll be well optimized for.
CPU = £100
GPU = £80
RAM = £25
Storage = £25/£50
Other parts = £80
Total = £310/£335
Retail prices =
320GB PS4 = either £299 and Sony take a small loss or £349 and Sony makes a good amount of each unit sold.
500GB PS4 = either £349 or £399, Sony make a profit either way, a large profit on the latter amount.

Plausible specs, atleast better than what we heard before E3:

Gaikai will provide PS4 backwards compatibility for PS3 games.

PS4 will have 10GB of XDR2 memory

PS4 will have AMD APU

PS4 will have an HD6600 (meaning it will be less powerful then WiiU)

The specs I listed are also very similar to the more recent rumour (post E3), making me even more confident in it.

Those rumours look real. I read the site it was coming from and they really had some insider information in the past: first artwork of UC Golden Abyss, games with online passes etc.

One thing to remember, Sony is looking at gaming to be a profit center for the company, if I recall correctly. Thus, it won't sell this at a loss (some predictions herein appear to have them doing that). Also, it will probably be expected to cover some marketing and R&D costs -- which may increase the actual sale price.

My guess is in the $400 USD range. That's about as high as Sony (or anyone) can go without committing "sales suicide."

right - so everyone, go shopping for hardware for $400 and see what you can get with this by now. this will most probably be some sort of performance the ps4 will get when sony doesn't want to make another loss. given the time it will release, add r&d-costs, building-costs, marketing etc. and you are done.

I like the specs, but I'm sorry, it NEEDS to sell for $350/£280 or less.

They may have got away with it for the PS3, but in this climate; no way.

These specs? It could sell for $350, maybe take a small loss, probably break even. Defnite profit when you add software sales and other services like Netflix and PS+

Yes, definitely, hence I think the specs are about accurate.

Oh right! I misunderstood you at "but I'm sorry"

It will release for $400 so it profits from launch, albeit a small one. I'm 100% sure of that.
