Last night I decided to site down with a 90's movie favorite of mine, Daylight. Does it stand the test of time, or does it flounder in the evolutionary pool? First lets take a look at the typical 90's Stallone Movie.
It does not matter which movie you pick, all of Stallones 90's movies have the same actors in them that were barely surviving in the industry during that decade alone.
Kevin Connolly ~ Rocky V
JoBeth Williams ~ Stop or my Mom will shoot!
Martin Ferrero~ What about this guy (Jurrasic Park sleazball) Also in Stop or my Mom will Shoot!
Benjamin Bratt, Dennis Leary, and Wesley Snipes ~ All in Demolition Man
Armand Assante and Rob Schneider ~ Judge Dredd ( Yes, you see Rob now, but remember when he was in every 90's movie?)
Amy Brenneman Viggo Mortensen Dan Hedaya Jay O. Sanders Trina McGee Stan Shaw ~ All in Daylight!
Now you may be wondering, "What are you talking about?" I still see these characters in the occassional tv movie or commercial. That is true, but the 90's was most of these stars time to shine. In what other decade could you have been force fed movie after movie after movie of Dennis Leary? Wesley Snipes career basically died there, Sandra and Viggo rose up, and the rest of these people will go down as just another bunch of extras that happened to be in a Stallone movie. What is strange is that so many of his movies have these second rate actors instead of just paying less for some newbies. It seems like every movie I watch of his I am staring at more and more actors that I have seen multiple times, if only for a few scenes in various movies. Is there a point? No. Just something that I notice when I watch a stallone movie.
To be honest this is one Stallone movie that is short on catch phrases. Maybe he started to figure out that the World was done with catch phrases. I do not know. Either way his rival Arnold would continue to use them in movies like Eraser, where he said this to an Alligator after shooting it in the head, "Your luggage". Bruce Willis is still holding on as well with his "YippekiA**********" line.
Now Stallones only catch Phrase comes at the end of Daylight, but the movie is already over so it matters little. What was it? Something stupid about darkness or daylight of course.
Screaming Irrational bad guys
Can you have a 90's or 80's action movie with out the stupid punk rocker who screams, laughs hysterically, and is horribly evil? Do not worry, in a scene that makes no sense at all three punk rockers with tatoos and knives steal a brief case and a car from some sort of business man. Do not worry about what was in the briefcase, because with in 5 minutes of expertely running from the cops they go into the tunnel flip the car and land in a Military truck full of explosive chemicals that takes the whole tunnel down and totally destroyes close to 1,000 lives. A dozen or so lucky people which include: Prisoners, a meth addict, a security guard who was in the movie Snake eyes, a nobody, two old people with a dog, and the ill fated Viggo Mortenson. Long story short, three screaming maniacs are what make this movie work.
When I think about it, every Stallone movie seems to be the same from this period. In Cliffhanger he has the crazy Airplane gang that do whatever it takes to have Stallone slowly take them out on the mountain, Judge Dredd is nothing but screaming future folks who have nothing to lose. I could name countless more. Why is it that henchmen have to be total idiots. like most of the underlings in the original Batman Movies. STallone could tell us, but then that would take away from his upcoming movie The Expendables 2, where a team of wrestlers and 70 year olds take on the world ala the movie "REd".
Daylight was a good movie! But it was extremely dark. People are maimed and mutilated all over the place, dogs drown, George the security guard is rescued/paralysed/then left to die as Stallone cries and leaves him to save his own life, Viggo thinks himself as a god and has the tunnel collapse on him, a prisoner has a spike stab through him and asks someone to tell his father he helped~ but then seconds later says nevermind, he will not believe you.
That all happens in just 20 minutes of the movie people!
Stallone is just a taxi cab driver, but he knows more than everyone in the city, and he can just walk into any enforcement office when ever he wants and get past 30 cops without being caught. In other words, just another amazing acting job by Stallone. His fake crying scenes are over the top (!) terrible as well. In the end when everyone continues to ignore him and do what they want, Stallone and the random 90's female actor that was mentioned above are left to die. He then thinks of something impossible. He screams and punches the Mud wall so hard that an air bubble forms sucking them up into some river near New York. Both are saved, and that is when we get the line.
