A $600 machine that cant play used games and can't play PS3-games. Why even bother

Nope. They are aiming for affordable which is why they cut PS3 B/C.

They did, but was eventually stripped...so?

Don't forget the Vita. Sony would rather sell you the same game over again than allow you to keep playing. If this rumor is true... which I can easily see happening

Sell you the same game over and over again? Um...who is making you buy it?

HD remasters and collections are there to introduce the games to the new gamers. The nostalgic fans buying it is just a huge +.

people need to get real

they wont put BC in it because the PS3 will still be around

but what the hell do they mean buy having to be connected to PSN to play the game?

so if my internet is down i guess i just completely cant play the game i bought right??

-_-

I'm pretty sure they say that to get the game started, you need to connect it to your PSN account.
if you don't have interent then you can still play the games, they will just be limited. For example Uncharted 4s multiplayer will be locked unless you have activated the game.

Sony is gonna watch us 24/7 they even are gonna build a kinect like camera in it and track your every move you make even when you a streaming porn movie.. and with the automatic social media connection it's gonna post a pic of you jerking off on your facebook and twitter... it's that powerfull!

now seriously... GPU could be a modified 7950 to output a max of 100 to 120 watt and CPU could go as high as 60 whatt (200 max for total, energy and temperature is key now)... 2 to 3 GB for GPU and a 1.5Gb for main... not having BC is not a deal breaker IMO... its not the case that all PS3 will stop work at the launch date of "Orbis"

Whatever it is you are smoking, I want some..

Seriously people, stop spreading those silly specs around. A console has to target the $200-$250 range, anything else is suicide.

Currently, we can roughly calc with:

$15 per 100mm^2 die area for high chip yields

$25 per 100mm^2 die area for satisfactory waver production yields

$35-$50 for unsatisfactory yields. And the 28nm nodes are currently ALL running on unsatisfactory yields (GF even has problems with its 32nm nodes), hence the high prices of all the new 28nm graphic cards).

So a (modified) 7950/680 would be around $150, add your 2-3G of GDDR ram and you are are at around $300 for the GPU (for 2012).

Add a $100-$150 (28nm) CPU, and even more ram, and the rest of your console ($100) and you can manufacture your PS4 for around $550, pointing to a $700 console. Yeah like that's gonna happen..

Don't forget to add the "The console won't run used games" rumour, it is almost mandatory now. Also use the word "stacked" a lot (as in all those GAF threads by umpteen clueless  twit posts).

Seriously people, next gen consoles will have marginally more power than current consoles (and talking about "power", better GPUs don't count as "more power", they just mean you can output better pics if you want. Something has to drive those GPUs and it's not going to be gigantomanical CPUs).

1. PS3 and Xbox 360 say hi.
2. Where there is smoke, there's fire. These rumors come from reliable sources. None of them say a minor increase in power. They all say exponential.

It'll be interesting to see how this impacts stores that sell used games. Right now, online passes are pretty much the first step in getting a little of that money back to the publisher. If the cost to unlock a full game in the next generation is $20 or more, then I see no reason to buy used games anymore. It just sucks that you'll never be able to borrow a full game from your friend and vise versa unless you are able to have your PSN id on their console.

@italics - How come adding 2-3gb of RAM costs $150? Never knew it was that expensive

@bolded - PS3 and VITA are sold at losses (PS3 was for the first 3-4 years).

@underlined - I disagree. You wanna bet?

3G fast GDDR5 is around $75. Add board complexity (more planes required at those speeds), more power supply circuitry, more cooling, basically more of everything. VITA is (if we believe Sony, which is reasonable, as the only unknown is the costs of the mOLED screen) sold above manufacturing costs (but obviously below production costs currently). The PS3 never sold below manufacturing costs, but had prohibitive production costs attached to it which made it lose about $2-300 on each unit sold initially. The next XBox2/PS4/WiiU CPUs won't be "exponentialy" more powerful than the Cell/Xeon. Even a CPU three times as powerful as the cell/Xeon would be prohibitivly expensive to manufacture.

this is end of 2013 we are talking about... the prices you use are useless by that time...
i am sure a 250$ console is not what MS or Sony stand by in terms of quality and processing power... Yes they have a stand in the business and they will want to keep it since was so expensive to build it... i am almost sure that PS4 or Orbis or what ever is her name, will cost 600$ at launch at least... useless ipads cost that and sell, smart phones cost that and sell, SSDs cost alot more that mechanical HDDs and sell... lots of premium, high end, what ever you want to call it are for sale and sell. not as much as 250$ weak last gen consoles but sells and there is a market for it... the 50 more % of market share of the HD twins prove my point ... so yes, i still stand by my prediction!

BTW... GPU - Graphics Processing Unit... means it has processing power in the unit... check the processing power under the GPU segment in the wikipedia to see that your last statement is wrong. flat out wrong.

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

It's crazy how people is talking PS4 and Sony is talking ten year life span.

Sergiodaly, the problem with your prediction isn't cost but power consumption and heat dissipation. A 180 watt GPU at 28 nm processing will not be 100 watt next year even with upcoming 22/20 nm processing.
