I don't think some of the people on this site realize the power. We could solve millions of problems that we have been trying to figure out for 1,000s of years. Maybe even get the answer on how to make us evolve and become more efficient. Questions like how to live longer and maybe even become immortal. Cure disease and many, many things. This, if used for good, will be our answer to the stars and beyond. I always wanted to travel in space, Not only would this be able to solve hunger, Poverty, health, science, energy, enviromental problems. The list goes on and on that this could accomplish in the right hands. I'm stoked as well but scared as well.

THIS! RIGHT HERE! This is LITERALLY what this is all going to cause, and more importantly, its going to happen in OUR LIFETIMES! But as you said, I'm scared as well, because the question is what happens when this is used for military purposes and whatnot.

You guys have lost your minds.

The prospect is simply a significant jump in computing power. That's it.

This will NOT solve hunger (are you insane), poverty, health or environmental problems.

Not to mention that it's very possible that they will run into a brick wall. Unfortunately the academic world (and I speak from experience here) is mainly governed by the neverending quest for funding. That's what they're doing here...Professor so-and-so want more PhD students so they get funding for research and then they get prestige and money from that.

Still, would it have the ability to do folding at a rate much much faster than what is possible now? It could cure cancer faster than PS3.

Can you please tell me how a faster processor will cure cancer?

Because last time I checked we're still shooting tumors with neutrons/protons (and by we I mean me), putting radioactive substances in the skin or giving them the good 'ol chemo.

......

There is a Folding@home program on PS3 that you have set to run at all times and it relays the info back to these guys.

Yeah, I realized that right after I posted it.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Quantum Computer will never be Home Computer. They are way too sensitive for normal use. You need shielding from other Quantum Particles, EM shielding, Special cooling. But once they make it work. They probably will set up giant underground Computer and grant access via Cloud for a fee.

Some of you really don't understand how this can and will solve real world problems such as cancer.

Sure in the most general terms, it is just a faster processor and overall system. But that's the whole point, isn't it?

Computers are not intelligent. They don't spontaneously solve problems. The reason they assist us in solving real problems is only because they are faster. We can program in the problem and variables to solving it and the computer can then run millions of possible solutions in seconds to find one that actually works.

Quantum computers can do that same process almost infinitely faster than the computers we have today. So solutions and automated tests on things like cancer, which take us currently months or years to run, would be done in fractions of seconds. Basically, it will take a process we're doing in decades, mere days.

So yes, it will solve real world problems because it is faster and capable of running far more complex problems. Imagine it running a real world weather simulation and helping determine how to literally stop tornadoes before they start. Japan, I think or maybe China, is currently doing that with traditional computers and it will take them a decade to really gain anything from it. With a Quantum machine, it might have already been done.

Don't underestimate the potential here with ridiculously narrow minded labels.

They have been close to a break through on this and holographic memory since before I was in high school. I wouldn't get my hope ups until they actually do. I has been over 15 years since they said they will have it work in a couple of years. X|

Souls cool and I agree it's going to have some significant impact when it happens.( I'm worried about some of those in software and engineering, when you have near infinite computing time ( compared to now) you do not need anymore to have smart people inputting the problems....... )

The next big break-through for me still is going to be nanotechnology though......

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

This would be pretty exciting if it's something we can achieve in a few years from now, and it could alter what 100 years from now will look like.

Too be honest, I'm not suprised IBM are behind this, powerhouse company they are.

They have been working on this for decades now. Yes it a great theoretical piece of hardware. But I have been hear stuff like it's coming soon and will change anything since I have been in high school. Its getting a little old. (I'm getting old.)

lol

Space travel, solving hunger, poverty and disease, energy and environmental problems will demand so much more than a fast computer. Increased computational power will only be a tool among many to solve those problems, not a general solution in any way.

Forget that insignificant stuff, what are the implications for gaming?
