Are we ready for Quantum Computers in our lifetimes?

They will be our saviors. 16 23.53%

They will be our destruction. 24 35.29%

Too early/hard to tell. 27 39.71%

Yep, I had a friend tell me about this while we got high a few weeks ago. He is really into science and technology so we usually have pretty good discussions while smoking.

Infinite processing power.,, but can it run Crysis?

You mean fusion right.

yep, sorry for the error that somewhat killed the argument.

However, if one adds up all the money that went into tocamacs and the other thingie, one could have built enough solar power plants by now to pretty much run the world (over the day, at least).

I'm not biased; My father-in-law has a solar company and the more he sells the more stuff I get, so...

BUT, I'm pretty sure the equation is a little uglier than most think. Storage of energy is the actual problem here. It's just not happening.

Not long now before it'll be in your iPhone. :D

I cant wait to see this but the only thing i worry about is the fact that it could find any password in one second surely that is not a good thing.

New passwords would be created on Quantum computers, so encryption models would improve as well.

I read most of it. Totally beyond me what it is all about. What does it actually mean? What will soon be possible and why are they at a tipping point?
None the less, still very exciting times!

Imagine computing and processing at a speed which was previously though unfathomable. For example, a single Quantum Computer could do an entire years worth of Simulation Folding on a multitutde of current supercomputers for something like Cancer in a matter of an hour, or maybe even less. This will advance and change technology and science in a way that the average person can't even begin to understand. This opens up countless doors into a totally different world devoid of disease and plentiful in prosperity for example. The potential is staggering, however scary at the same time, the question is what this kind of power will be used for when it comes to fruition. I also embedded a video in the OP to further shed light on the concepts.

This news blows me away, just amazing. Can't say I'm entirely shocked though with how many things I've already seen become reality that I never thought possible.

At the bold...I understand how this would help medical/scientific research significantly, but I don't see how the eradication of disease would result from faster processing power. This seems pretty unlikely, since there are so many other factors involved in discovering a cure for a given disease. Do explain, bc I obviously only know as much about quantum computing as what I just read. Also, how would prosperity result? This I really don't understand lol. You seem knowledgeable on the topic, hence why I'm asking.

Shit.

shit shit shit shit shit.

Don't let those computers see any Star Trek, Mass Effect, Doctor Who, the Matrix, or Terminator or we're fucked.

The entire concept is using the potentially infinite processing power to run theorms and hypothesis at such a fast rate that it can yield an answer for something that would normally take us years or even decades to produce on current technology. This WILL change the world when it comes to fruition, in a big way. As other stated "Its just going to speed things up, its just another step in processing power." Step? No, this is a leap in all senses of the word and literally by many considered the key to unlocking many of universes most difficult problems in secrets.

Some of you really don't understand how this can and will solve real world problems such as cancer.

Sure in the most general terms, it is just a faster processor and overall system. But that's the whole point, isn't it?

Computers are not intelligent. They don't spontaneously solve problems. The reason they assist us in solving real problems is only because they are faster. We can program in the problem and variables to solving it and the computer can then run millions of possible solutions in seconds to find one that actually works.

Quantum computers can do that same process almost infinitely faster than the computers we have today. So solutions and automated tests on things like cancer, which take us currently months or years to run, would be done in fractions of seconds. Basically, it will take a process we're doing in decades, mere days.

So yes, it will solve real world problems because it is faster and capable of running far more complex problems. Imagine it running a real world weather simulation and helping determine how to literally stop tornadoes before they start. Japan, I think or maybe China, is currently doing that with traditional computers and it will take them a decade to really gain anything from it. With a Quantum machine, it might have already been done.

Don't underestimate the potential here with ridiculously narrow minded labels.

This, in so many ways. The sheer pessimism expressed in this article surprises me. I also have my fears, but thats more oriented towards this being used for greed/power struggles thus leading to our ultimate destruction through the militarization of this technology. However the potential is in many ways LIMITLESS. Will the changes happen overnight? NO, But they WILL on the other hand happen at an accelerated speed that we did not once though possible. Also it should be noted that this could be a potential key into other Quantum theories.
