At best its a $300 handheld with only a few games available. I never understand why people expect miracles.

3DS didn't do well, actually exceeding predecessors so far, until it reduced its price sub-$200 and had a far larger library of quality games that hit mass appeal.

Vita won't be at that for a year at least. Next Xmas will be the first time it sales well relative to the PSP and even then it will be less due to substantially higher cost barrier.

Only way to fix is to redesign as a smartphone.

$250.

Rol already stated my point, but adding the mandatory memory card adn taxes, etc, you're far closer to $300 or more. That is the real base price.

@superchink and Rol

almost every retailer that i can think of bundled the 4gb memory card with the wifi system. it was probably much harder to find a vita without a memory card than one with it.

Very first place I looked. I saw no bundle option with a card and the 4GB card is $20, so $270 w/o game or taxes. So, yeah far closer to $300 any way you slice it.

They really dropped the ball on memory cards - they took a lot of flack for selling them at inflated prices and making them mandatory. If they built in 4 gigs in every PSV they would have this covered and in the end they still ended with bundling tons of 4/8gig cards at launch.

10 weeks in Japan: 3DS - 979K
2 Weeks in North America - 513K
1 week in Europe - 333.5K

Total = 1.825 million 3DS's sold in the same period as Vita sold 1.2 million. 3DS didn't have the advantage of the holiday season either.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes the PSP Vita to catch up to the flop numbers of the 3DS. Currently, the way the numbers are looking, Japan is still Sony's stronghold as far as handheld sales are concerned, it had the best launch there.

Vita hasn't been out for that long in any of those territories....

Yes it has. In Japan it launched December 17th nearly 11 weeks ago. 2 weeks ago in the US, and 1 ago week in Europe. It also had the benefit of the peak of the holiday season in Japan, the 3DS did not.

Also, whether the PSP1 was in a slump or not shouldn't matter. Sony launched with their biggest ad campaign in history; also, recent history showed Nintendo launching Wii with record success after a 10 year slump.

how so?

the memory cards dont cost $50 (some do), but it cost $20.

so $270.

if you are including tax (not all places collect tax), its still less than $300. and by that logic, the 3DS is nearly a $200 system. the xbox $330, etc.

also you dont need a memory card for some games, also if you cant find a mem card for less than $20, you arent looking very hard

Add a game.... and you do require memory card for the system... and the ps vita cards are not normal memory cards so they are not found cheaper else where.

edit, only place I found it cheaper was used on ebay.

okay, add a game for the 3ds= nearly $250, add a game for xbox over $400.

and amazon.com you can buy used for less than $12.

well it opened lower then psp did, opened lower then 3ds, and it currently faces a price gap with the 3ds and a lack of high selling software.

The second week will be veeery interesting
