Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS eshop size limit revealed by Team Meat

That 40mb limit on WW titles was disastrous and beyond idiotic. I'm glad that the 3DS won't have that barrier.

Still  amazing though considering some of the games that were released on WW.  I have a few WW titles that I am very proud to own.  Playing Motoheroz with friends is a blast and the Rebirth of the classic games are pretty decent.  I also enjoyed the hell out of World of Goo even though it would have been nice if the Wii version had a level editor (probably could have if it was 2 GB instead of 40 mb).  Anyways, I just wanted to point out that there were some very nice games made even with the very limited space.

it was that small because in the beginning only sd cards worked duh i thought you knew this in 2006 but i use vc more so i dont care and 2 gig well thats half the size the full retail games so thats actually great

No smart ass comment about how Nintendos a failure, and they shouldn't have done this? Seems to be the running theme here.

SDHC didn't really take off and have very low prices till about 2 or so years ago.  When the Wii was released SD prices for a 2 or 4 GB was around 15-30 dollars.  Now you can get a 32 SDHC card for under 40 dollars on Amazon.

It was a misquote from Nintendo Gamer, the limit (if there is any) isn't known yet.

Team Meat clarifies eShop file size limitation, not necessarily 2GB

The 3DS eShop definitely has some sort of file size restriction. This was made clear by Capcom’s Christian Svensson last year. However, contrary to what we reported on last night, 2GB might not be the limit after all – it could be more, it could be less.

Reader “joclo” sent us information regarding the file size limit, and it appeared that Team Meat’s Tommy Refenes confirmed the 2GB restriction in a recent issue of Nintendo Gamer. This wasn’t the case, though.

Refenes took to Twitter to clarify the situation:

“Original Quote on size restrictions: ‘…or if they do they are reasonable restrictions (40MB is horrible….2GB is reasonable).’ Never said that 2GB was the size restriction on eShop. I do not know what it is.”

“joclo” did provide me with a photo of the quote a short while ago, and Nintendo Gamer’s wording is a bit odd. This is what the relevant excerpt states in full:

“Refenes, however, doesn’t think there’s much wrong with the current setup (‘it’s honestly pretty easy’) though he’s hoping that Wii U doesn’t have size restrictions on download games – ‘or if they do, they are reasonable restrictions. [WiiWare's] 40MB is horrible, but [3DS's] 2GB is reasonable.’”

It looks like Nintendo Gamer added in the extra “3DS”, even though this isn’t what Refenes actually said…

While I don't see the need for a 40MB barrier, we must keep in mind that a blockbuster like Ocarina of Time was 32MB. I'm not too familiar with Super Meatboy. Did they rely much on FMV?

Late '80s, I guess, and his die hard fans (and even he himself) have been trying for some time to pretend he never said it because the original source isn't on the net: but it can't be there, the Web didn't exist yet! He said it in an interview or a conference.

No, just bad coding and an incentive from Microsoft to make it a console exclusive on the 360. That's how you suddenly realize that a known size limit is a problem.

It's Sony and Squaresoft all over again!

A 1987 Macintosh had a maximum memory capacity of 20MB, so it is unlikely anyone would be saying this in the late '80s.  This sounds more like early '80s when the first MS-DOS machines were coming out.

640kB was for RAM, notHDD, but you're right anyway, it must have been early '80s, as in 1985 intel launched the 386 (although MS started using its 32bit quite later).
