It will start to fall behind DS soon though as I don't believe any system will ever again sell the amount that DS sold in Japan during 2006 (about 8.5 million in one year).

It will only keep on selling too, with compelling software coming this year it will top at least 7M before end of year,

Time and again, when people were saying doom, I said just wait until Christmas.  I think it would have been a great success, even at $250 if they had stuck to their guns.  The upcoming library and the unique features were just too much to resist.  At $170, it was an even bigger success.  I don't think it will match the DS, though.  The world has changed.  Many people that bought a DS for Brain Age or Nintendogs can find a similar fix elsewhere.  The DS isn't the sexy option it once was.  Still glad it proved all the naysayers wrong.

I too believed that christmas would be the turning point for the 3DS regardless of the doomsayers.

I do however believed mistakes were made with the launch price and poor software. The constant releasing of new DS hardware was probably another factor that put many off, as they decided to bypass the 3DS and wait for the lite or XL or whatever version.

The statement that there will be no updates to the 3DS for a while made many DS owners bite the bullet and upgraded from the DS.

Whichever way you look at it, it is how you come out that matters and Nintendo has pulled it off again.

Hopefully lessons learnt will give the wii u a better start and even better success.

Indeed, did DS even have a revision/price cut in its first 58 weeks? I have no idea.

I don't know about any price cut or anything, but the DS Lite was released in Japan on March 2, 2006, which would be about week 66 for the DS I think.

IGN says the DS hit the 5 million mark on the 56th week.

It was a shaky first half and a record breaking second half for the 3DS, so kudos for that. Hopefully this year will be even better for the handheld. The great games are coming, so there's definitely things that we gamers can look forward to in 2012. ^_^

I'll just celebrate both days. The 25th as the day I got it and the 26th as the day it was released. I hope I can make myself a nice weekend.

The 3DS will clearly fall short of that, because Nintendo isn't putting out the software that is needed for such sales levels. And since the Wii U launch will be interfering, Nintendo's focus is going to shift too soon to make the 3DS a monster like the DS.

However, just because Nintendo can't match the DS performance in the foreseeable future doesn't mean that they can't outdo the DS later on in the lifecycle. It all depends on Nintendo's commitment to the platform in the coming years.

Well... what software should Nintendo put out this year to reach those levels?
