Forums - General Discussion - CES 2008: PS3, Blu-ray in 45% U.S households by 2011

I hate this!

I was pissed off when FOX, Warner were touting PS3 sales as Bluray players to play their movies on. Sony is really playing a very dangerous game here. They are pushing the PS3 Bluray player so hard that it's getting neglected as a game player. I support the PlayStation/Sony as a gaming products, not this stupid Bluray. I feel abused and used by Sony who seem to be using their gaming fans to promote Bluray for movies and have ulterior motives.

With everyone (wrongly) criticising the PS3's lack of games on the system, a good way to make up for it is by showing off the other features. Next year, when the PS3 has an even better line up, then Sony will really push the games line. If they did it now, it would be easy for M$ to counter it but next year, it will be a different story

Can someone tell me the point of having a Blu-Ray movie and NOT having an HDTV? You don't get to see ANY of the clarity of the movie (well, technically, u get it in 480p I suppose). If I didnt' have an HDTV, I wouldnt' give a damn about Blu-Ray OR HD-DVD...actually, I have 3 HDTVs and still don't give a damn! lol

Buing for the future, and in my case there is an HDTV in my house, it is just in the main room where my parents watch TV, so I can only rarely use it there

wow i never though about it this way

that does seems rather..possible if you think about

Well, dude, think about this.

FOX/Warner both said that their were 3.5mil Bluray players in NA, 3mil of them were PS3's. We know that Toshiba said that 1mil HD DVD players were in NA. You then have that Bluray movies were greatly outselling HD DVD movies all year despite and that the PS3 game sales have not exactly been impressive in NA. You put them together and you get that the PS3 is being used as a BR player which is a major problem for us gamers...

@Sorrow880

The games available for the PS3 is not where the problem lies. The problem lies with how many of these PS3 owners actually give a damn about gaming? I think evidence is starting to clearly show that many PS3 owners areusing the PS3 as a BR player and a buying movies. I am very excited about the PS3 upcoming library as well but that does us no good if PS3 owners don't want to buy games in NA.

honestly I couldnt care as long as Sony is moving consoles. I use my PS3 as both a Blu-ray Player and a game console. Do you honestly believe that after Toshiba hold out it's white flag that Sony will continue pushing Blu-ray as hard for the PS3? no they will try to push the stand alones.

You are also forgetting the PSN titles. We truly have no idea how well PSN titles are selling or how much devs are making off PSN games. They could be making small fortunes and we dont know it.

Figure this, most PlayStation fans ARE NOT shooter fans. So they would not likely buy Uncharted, Resistance,  Warhawk, COD4, UT3 etc, etc. Most of the titles released have been shooters so why do you think more people are using it as a Blu-ray player then a game console.. its lack of games in the genres they like.

Lol, sorry,

I thought you were complaining about the ps3's first year software and upcoming line-up....gets really old, because I think it had a stellar first year and has an even more exciting year coming.

In regards to software sales, I think that Sony's first party sales have been poor, but third party software that is optimized for the ps3 (not a shitty port like Orange Box, etc.) has sold just as well in the US as the 360 software.

For example....

360 has 3x the number of consoles as the ps3, so it should sell 3x more copies of a game if the attatch rates are the same.

Call of Duty 4 sold about 3x more copies in the US on the 360

Assassin's Creed sold about 3x more copies in the US on the 360.....

That's good--It means the ps3 is selling just as well (even though it is competing against achievements and Live) as the 360 versions when you take install base into account.

What's worrisome to me is the first party titles aren't doing too well.  I think that part of it is people aren't interested in new IP's nowdays...they don't want Heavenly Swords & Uncharteds, they want something they already know, something they're familiar with like Dark Cloud 3 or God of War 3, etc.

Well, I now only have access to a PS3 & 360...Plan on buying a wii soon (lol, if I can ever find one available!) but will probably wait until some of the major RPG's come out like Dragon Quest & Tales, etc.

Anyhow, I'm so far behind in games to play that I'm not in a huge hurry (lol, haven't even gotten a chance to finish God of War II yet!)

Consider this - it cost some to transfer movies to BR, but not as much, I'm sure, as producing a game. They can make oodles pimping the BR aspect and spend less time on the gaming part. The BR aspect is why it was delayed in the first place - and it was obvious to me - as well as others - that Sony was focusing efforts on making it the BEST BR player on the market. Gaming? Not so much ...

I do hope I am wrong on this - but once again, Sony is pimping the PS brand to get ahead in other areas. So sad, PS3 owners.

It is much sharper - I have 2 HD DVDs hooked up to a 480i SD tv - and you can tell the difference. I do have a projector and an LCD, but I prefer the TV, though I have been using the projector a lot lately ...

45%.

Of which what... you'd expect the majority to be standalones.

45% by 2011 really seems like quite the conservative estimate compared to the people who were raning that blu-ray would be the universal format by the end of 2009.

Considering they arn't likely being conservative (and infact quite bullish...) seems like they expect DVD to still reign supreme.

DVD still in the lead by 2011 then.

Nintendo still doomed?

According to Nielsen's research, DVD didn't achieve 45% of the US market until the end of 2002. In terms of market penetration it did not overtake VHS until late '06.

For BD to be in 45% of US households by 2011 it will have to experience faster adoption rates than DVD, which does not seem likely.
