Forums - Sales Discussion - 3DS begins to outpace Wii next week

3DS
jp February 26, 2011 - 40 weeks
eu March 25, 2011 - 36 weeks
us March 27, 2011 - 36 weeks
=9.8M

Wii:
NA November 19, 2006 + 36 = July 28 = 3.62
jp December 2, 2006 + 40 = Sept 8 = 3.52M
eu December 8, 2006 + 36 = Aug 17 = 2.87M
=10 million

3DS will almost certainly rocket past the Wii next week because next week the 3DS will most likely sell in the million range again - its largest game, Mario Kart debuts in the US. So 3DS sold 935K this week, meanwhile the Wii at the aligned period is selling 220K (US-100K, EU - 87.5K, JP - 33K). By the end of this year, the 3DS should have a fairly dominating lead as the fastest selling videogame system. Not bad for a system which "flopped at launch" =)

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Since the 3DS may soon be on track to being the fastest selling dedicated videogame device over the initial 12 month period it is obviously doomed, and Nintendo will soon have to leave the hardware manufacturing side of the business ...

also, Nintendo will bankrupt in 5 years time, as very accurate analyst Patcher predicts, or it wasn't him?

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Haven't this resulted in a loss though? And didn't really leave much room for price cuts, the current difference in UK is about £10-20 between 3DS and DSi on Amazon :|

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

It was only a matter of when, not if since the price-cut.

Which is good news for Nintendo, it's always smart to have something selling like cup-cakes when you're ramping up to launch a new console (WiiU)

Nintendo is the DOOMEDZ though.

The only worrying thing is that they're possibly selling at a loss, they need to be careful the price-cut doesn't hit them in the back later.

You guys do recall that Wii was horribly supply constrained its first few years?

Trying to compare sales of the 3DS, which can be found easily on nearly any shelf, to sales of Wii, which had lines in front of stores constantly throughout its first few years, is ridiculous

y'know if I could make a rule about this stupid meme that we have going on our forums I would do it in an instant.  So many posts that add absolutely nothing to the conversation and just come off as pretentious and irritating.  I'm usually big into people being able to post whatever they want within reason, but this is getting real annoying.

The Meme isn't going to survive much longer, so you might aswell "enjoy it" while it lasts ...

With every system that launches people are immediately drawn to defining its success or failure based on early sales and, if sales are not amazing right from the start, people start claiming that it will be a failure. For multiple reasons the reaction to the 3DS was worse than most that I have seen, and when Nintendo corrected their mistakes this meme appeared started being used to "thumb their noses" in the face of all the people who made extremely negative predictions based on early sales.

Once the PS Vita is on the market and the 3DS is well on its way to being a very successful platform the Meme will disappear because people will be far more focused on whether the PS Vita will be a successful system. Months after that, when the Wii U launches, the PS Vita will stop being the center of attention, and not too long after that the other consoles will release that and take the attention away from the Wii U.

Well you're more than likely right on the point that the meme won't last much longer, but that's because memes in general don't remain in popularity that long.  Issue is how annoying and pointless the comment is now.  But we'll just move on to some other generic annoying phrase from some other fan group once this is gone, so actually trying to set rules for these types of things would be more trouble than it's likely worth.

but why, he is true after all, people online like to declare Nintendo's products as doomed too early

they doomed the Wii as well before it even came out

3DS is probably being sold at a loss, but sales are sales, and they are probably going to get it back with Mario Kart and Mario alone....

they even made profit from GC
