The closest you'll get to Pink Floyd by a modern band is Porcupine Tree, they are one of the best bands I've ever heard. They formed in the 90s but a lot if not most of their work is from the 2000s. I suggest you check their live albums Anesthetise, Arriving Somewere, Coma Divine. Here some examples:

Just started listening to the first song and for some reason the intro reminded me of Mad World (which I heard on Donnie Darko).  Anyways, I do feel a little Pink Floyd type vibe.  Nice laid back music that has good melody and lyrics.  Thanks for the suggestion on this band.  It isn't like I want or expect bands to sound like my favorite bands from the past but I would like something that would nice just as nice or better (just like most of the classic rock bands that I love).  It just seems most rock has lost all of its structure (such as the melody and lyrics don't even really fit right).  It is hard for to explain since my music terminology is poor but I hope you get my point.  Just pick any CCR song for my example.

Sorry but... who are you referring to with CCR? :) Ah ok now I got it.

Oh god, no other way around! But like others have said, that's not the mainstream stuff (although some of it deserves some credit ..)

I think another reason why a lot of people think Rock's best days are behind it is because of the music games...

They introduced a lot of the young generation to a lot of old famous songs.

These types of games are not popular anymore however screaming along "WOHOO Livin On a Prayer" is something I will never forget.

In my opinion, most of the best music has come out after 2000...

EVERYTHING after 2000 sucks, it's a fact.

You aren't including video games into the everything category are you?

because rap sucks, and most music is rap
dubsteb is also terrible its basically techno ( which you can enjoy listening too) with way to much bass.
the new bands that are for rock and stuff never sing about happy stuff anymore, in the 90s everything was good, after 2000 stuff started to go downhill

i really dislike when people say this and generalize, there is good music, but its not mainstream, i say you don't bother yourself to look.

Couldn't have said it better my self, but I also think a lot of music from the early 2000s was good. I'd say around 2006 maybe it started taking a turn, and now they just play the same 3 songs on the radio over and over again. The good music is still there, its just more difficult to find it now since it isn't played on the radio. I rarely find myself listening to mainstream music anymore other than Kanye West, who I find has been consistently good for the last decade.

Well, grunge wasn't necessarily the most happy music during the 90s.  However, there were plenty of bands that played happy and sad songs/ their music varied a lot.  Smashing Pumpkins is a prime example of this especially their Mellon Collie and the Infite Sadness album which had an amazing amount of variation between the songs.  Some of the classic happy type songs from the 90s that I remember most are Smashing Pumpkins - Today, 1979, Thirty-Three, Cherub Rock (even some of their sad sounding songs I consider happy - Disarm) ; Blind Melon - No Rain; Sublime - Santeria, Caress Me Down, What I Got, and the list can go on....

nerds lol^^ always against the mainstream thinking their opinion is more important and the only truth.

like i said in this thread i hear classical music like beethoven and so on which some call the best music even if they don't like it, but how can i say a minimal electro track isn't as good as this music? it's just another art of music.

if i would think like "only hard to play music or music with a literary text is good" i would have to think about that in my classical genre as well and then i only could here the most complicated composition because all others aren't as complicated or whatever then this one. then i only could here one composition my whole life.

if you think black eyed pease are shit ok, but they make music people can dance to and easily sing with which makes more people happy than your music or my music so this is one great result as well of music.

they work as long as others for their songs maybe they are repetetive but they do it because they know people like it and if people like this this can't be bad music it only can be against your tase because you like "intelligent lyrics" or so.

i really don't get why the songtext has to be written from a philosopher to be good music. it's not better music then. it is just a song with a better text but that lacks in other parts a black eyed pease song doesn't. danceability for example which was always one part of music as well.

to dance the viennese walz for example needs music which isn't too complicarted as well. but this music isn't as good as others because of that.

you only could say: "the songs of the past were better written" or so but not that it was better music.

i know you won't understand this so i will leave this thread to stop getting you on your nerves. the good thing in this is that it's your problem not of the majority who love to hear music nowadays. i don't like this music as well that's my problem but i won't say people nowadays hear bad quality music. i only hear music no of my friends hears and that would have been rthe case in the 60s as well that sucks enough haha.

I try not to condone others for enjoying music that is far from my taste but even I am guilty of this (such as my previous remark about laughing at any guy that enjoyed Black Eyed Peas).  I just felt abandoned with little music or barely any new bands to get into this past decade.  I have expanded my taste by going back in time to find artist that I never really listened to while I was a teenager (The Righteous Brothers, Elvis, music from the 50s/60s, etc...).  However, the music industry has left a foul taste in my mouth of personal preference this decade.  I feel abandoned and the only way to satisfy my taste is to dig deeper in the past decades of music.  Just to let you know, I enjoy many classical songs also which I found out when I took a music class during college that covered the classical music time period.
