Well China is expanding its military capabilities to the point where they are a threat to all of the United States bases in the Asian Pacific. New missile systems in use by China are capable of destroying every US military instillation and in a concentrated attack they would leave American forces and their allies defenseless.
The US has realized the impending threat to their allies and the national interests of America. As such the US Government has reached a defense agreement with Australia to base up to 1,000 marines in Darwin. Expansion of the US's military defenses in the city of Perth are also expected. The Australian Government sees these new troops and bases as necessary "From the Australian perspective, here we are with a vast coastline, a population of just 23?million. It has always made national security sense to have a strong security alliance with America."
"The U.S. could build their forces up quickly in places like Australia out of missile range from China," said Alan Dupont, a professor of international security at Sydney University.
President Barack Obama is expected to confirm this new base and the permanent presence of US forces in Australia next week alongside Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Analysts expect the US president to call this new base a rotational base rather then a permanent base, this is due to the fact that neither the Australian Prime Minister nor the US President want to upset the Australian people or have them believe that they are being occupied.
The base in Australia in required for US defense in Asia Pacific. It will serve as a rapid reaction force. Increases in US military presence outside of China's missile rang is expected. A naval base is also being talked about because the current US Naval bases are all within striking distance of China.
With China's increasing military presence and the fact that China has begun threatening countries using their militaries to bully them. Threatening instability with US allies. This base is seen as a move to ensure the US can protect its interests in Asia Pacific as well as the interests of its allies!
What do you think is this base necessary? Should the US be building more bases around China in case a conflict in Asia breaks out?
