Super Mario 3D Land becomes the best-selling 3D Mario game for its first week, while the 3DS surges...

Mario has landed in Japan. The latest Media Create charts (via Andriasang) and it brings more than a bit of nostalgia for the DS-domination days. Super Mario 3D Land was of course the headline release, and it managed to beat out the first week sales of every preceding 3D Mario platformer - just slightly taking the crown from Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The full top-20 for the week of October 31st to November 6th, along with life-to-date figures, is as follows.

Despite a slew on new releases across most platforms, it was only the 3DS which saw a big shift in hardware sales compared to last week, and shift it most certainly did:

3. PS3: 26,966 (25,217)
4. Wii: 11,725 (11,784)
5. DSi LL: 2,041 (2,009)
6. X360: 1,699 (1,704)

Total Japanese sales for 3DS hardware now stand at just under 2.4 million.

3DS will do wonders this holiday now that it actually has quality NEW software as well as a really good price point.

UC3 and BF3 did pretty well too... maybe the Japanese are finally starting to warm up to western shooters since they now dominate the console industry.

Yeah, that's quite an improvement over the opening for Uncharted 1 or 2. Hopefully that means they'll start making more shooters themselves. I could use more stuff like Vanquish in my life!
