Secondly, we are better and more valued in the grand sceme of things, and it is precicely because we have "evolved" (if you believe such nonsense). Also, we are much higher up on the food chain than spiders. No matter how you try to spin it spiders are insignificant in comparison to us. But you never answered my question. Do you believe in the theory of evolution?

no we are not. We serve no purpose in the ecology of the world.  The ecosystem was working just fine for millions upon millions of years before we came along. If something like spiders vanished entirely, the ecosystem would go apeshit trying to fix itself, if humans went extinct, the planet would get along just fine.  while I didn't explain it perfectly, the only species that relies on humans is other humans.  No other species needs us, we do not help any other species.  Therefore the only species that has any reason to think we're the most important thing in the world is us.

Human life is only more 'valuable' because we are human. we serve no purpose, we have no humility, we do not create life, we only destroy it. To believe that humans are 'better' than chickens or bugs because we're human is a logical fallacy.

I told you, evolution is not faith based, so what's there to believe in?  It's science, it's fact, there is no element of faith in it.  Evolution happens, we see it, it's been 100% conclusively proven.

While you are right that the human species is less significant compared to all spiders, that's not what this thread is about. This thread is concerned with the life of one spider. One human is more important than one spider, which this thread is based upon. One human can acquire power and use it to better the world, save lives of humans, save lives of other species, clean the environment, etc. One spider can do very little in comparison.

Also, Please don't respond to the evolution topic. I want to keep that out of this thread.

that's not what this thread is about at all, this t hread is about discussing what you do when you see a spider.  The popular belief is that it's okay to kill a spider if it scares you (Even if it can't hurt you) since spiders are considered less important than humans.

And I don't want this to turn into an evolution debate either...since there's no debate.  anyone who denies evolution is real should be seeing professional help.

I usually catch them with a glass and set them outside. Some of the few insects I kill without regret are mosquitoes, leaches, and ticks.  Basically anything that wants my blood.

I don't agree with the belief that people should kill spiders out of fear. But for the people that do believe that, I was just saying that the spider-species-vs-human-species argument doesn't apply because those people are only harming one spider. The people that do believe humans are more important than spiders for the Earth are wrong though.

Posthing this again as you seem to respond to every post but mine.

I don't kill spiders out of ignorance, and even if I did, it has nothing to with being civilized or not.

I understand you (and with you, I mean everyone) are motivated to believe we are an advanced race but we're still just automatons for the most part. When we feel threatened and there is no negative consequence for us, we kill the threat. It's that simple. Irrational or not, doesn't matter. And yes, my life is more valuable than a spider's. It's also more valuable than yours. In fact, it's more valuable than any other life I know of. And yes, I feel threatened by large spiders. There is no negative consequence for me to kill it. 1+1=2. I kill the spider, and that's all there is to it.

What instrument of destruction do you use on the spiders?

Depends on the size. If it's really small, I have no problem with it. A bit larger and I catch it with a glass and drain it down the toilet (I know that's the way I'd be wanting to go!) and if it's a big ass motherfucker I throw water on it to slow it down (those fuckers can be FAST) and then catch it with a glass to throw it down the toilet. It's a pretty good strategy.

I can't go near them, I can't pick them up with a glass, I don't even have the courage to drop something on it if it's really big.

I'll either run out of a room and cover up every crack in the door, or if I'm feeling manly, I'll throw a yellow pages at it and get my step-dad to wipe it up in the morning.

I'm guessing you have the same spiders as the ones in the UK, huge and extremely fast, one of the fastest spiders on the planet I believe.
