Did Sony Fail The Playstation 3.

Two major missteps at launch and for the first 1-2 years really stalled PS3 sales:

1) PRICE. $599 was just too expensive given the market competition.
2) Sony's total arrogance over defending the 'value' of the price point and refusing to admit that PS3 sales were lagging.

I'll add to the arrogance item the bit about the non-rumble in the sixaxis controller. Sony played a game of chicken with Immersion (to license the rumble tech) and lost, then tried to argue that rumble was sooo "last gen" and nobody really wanted or needed it anyway.

Sony have really turned things around in the past 2 years (PSN disaster not withstanding) and has proven that with the right price point and great lineup of 1st party exclusives the PS3 -can- beat Xbox360 in sales. Unfortunately the 360's 1-year head start (with no competition) and the millions of RROD'd consoles that were 're-bought' (before MS's replacement policy) have kept the PS3 in 3rd place lifetime to date sales, but only by a very thin margin: 3.4million consoles worldwide.

Quick question:
If Sony lost monies with each PS3 sold, wouldn't the PS3 be further in the hole if they sold more consoles?

Yes, unless they made it up in game royalties.  If you wanted to hurt Sony in 2007 you'd buy a PS3 and never play it

People bought a ps3 just for blu-ray.

Though, I have a hard time believing that.

You sir, just proved a quick and valid point.

Anyways From what i know right now, Sony has been making money off the PS3 since they first released the Slim model back in August of 2009.  :)

no.

ps3 didn't start to profit sony until around april-august 2010

and as far as like november 2010 sony was only in the red(loss) with PlayStation Network. they said that they wouldn't be in the green(profit) with psn until 2011(aka until the current psn plus user's AT THAT TIME renewed their subscription's in 2011)

if it would have launched at $399 the gaming world would have been completely different today

Wii would have never taken off

Nah. Wii still would have raped the competition. It would have sold better WW for sure, but I actually wouldn't be surprised if the 360 still would have beaten it at that price point in the US.

another brand name doesn't matter guy

Never said it doesn't matter, I just think you overestimate the average consumer's loyalty to plastic.

Please provide a link to this if possible, because I distinctly remember Sony profiting off of the slim. I think you may be confused.

i didn't

thats why i said sony needed to launch it at $399

that was within consumer reach and would have done the deal.

i voted yes but its late so my answer is no.

shit happens and although the launch was the worse seen everybody had to know Sony would turn things around.

as far as failure is conserned i'd say it was everyone/thing from the price, Sony, thirdparty publishers, media, consumers, and everyone in between faild Sony! So yes we are all at falt.

No. Analysts failed Sony, the PS3 and gamers.

The analysts predicted a smashing success of the PS3, the Wii to sell 10 million, and that graphics would decide this gen. Sony listened to these people, they are paid to make predictions about the video game market.

If Sony failed the PS3, Nintendo failed the NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Sega failed everything and MS failed the original Xbox.

You do know that the NES and SNES won their generations right. Also everyone says that MS failed the 1st Xbox so I don't see what your point was.

I think he was going a long the line of these console WW sales, saying if ps3 failed at 50+ million, then all of those above failed for selling less.................I thnk dont take my word for it ;)
