BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Argentina's president called Britain a "crude colonial power" on Thursday after Prime Minister David Cameron said the Falkland Islands should remain British territory.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez took issue with remarks a day earlier by Cameron, who praised the British troops who retook the Falklands from the Argentines during the 1982 war over the islands.

"As long as the Falkland Islands want to be sovereign British territory, they should remain sovereign British territory — full stop, end of story," Cameron said in the House of Commons.

The South Atlantic islands are claimed by Argentina, which refers to them as Las Malvinas. Fernandez has insisted Argentina and Britain should negotiate over the islands, as the U.N. General Assembly has urged.

She said Argentina intends to keep raising its demands in international forums for negotiations with the British.

"We're going to say that in the 21st century they continue to be a crude colonial power in decline," Fernandez said during a televised ceremony in the northeastern province of Misiones.

Referring to Cameron's statements, Fernandez said that Argentina's foreign minister considered it an "expression of arrogance."

Fernandez on Monday had called for dialogue with London on the issue during a visit to Buenos Aires by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

I would have figured Argentina had gone away from that policy, merely because the Falkland war was a product of the Junta, and i thought the Argentines hated the Junta...

But yeah, much as i dislike Cameron, he's right. The only way Argentina could get it is if they flooded the islands with Argentine immigrants and then flipped the votes. Which i suppose would be possible, though Britain could stop that up with restrictive immigration policy

for whatever crazy reason (that they dont actually believe is a legally valid reason, since they refused to go to an international court to settle the dispute)   they have had this position for quite some years before that and will likely maintain this position for some time since they have the support of the leftist leaders in latin america who run the other spanish colonies.  

He would have a point if the islanders wanted to be part of Argentina. As they don't, he doesn't have a point.

Look, Ms Fernandez, we settled this 29 years ago. Don't bring it back up. The Falklands want to remain part of Britain, and they WILL remain part of Britain.

I don't know why they keep dragging this up. Is it because of the vast sea oil that Falklands have I wonder? The land has no value to them surely and it's well out of the 200mile cost limit that every country has.

Agentina's claim to ocean around it. Now while it's understandable they might claim the sea around Falklands, they even tried to claim sean around South Georgia and South Sandwich (over 1000miles away).

Falklands are British territory, Britain came and won the war, end of story.
