Yes i agree. i also think that Wada is fully aware of the mixed reception of FF13 both in Japan and overseas, and he will now hedge his bets on PDD4 to revive the series. which is why i think it would have to be coming sooner rather than later.

imo FF13-2 looks to be a step in the right direction with more gameplay options. FF13-2 has more RPG elements returning. but i dont think its the step in the right direction in terms of tone. i think what we need now is more of the realisim and belivability we had with FF12.

not to mention that while FF12 also recieved a mixed reception, however the critical reception of the game was extremely high.

theres no telling what feats PDD4 could acheive with the FF Tactics team leading them while at the same time responding to the criticisims of FF12. which i thought was a good game, but was not perfect.

anyway we will see - its possible that Sqaure want to wait until FF13-2 is released before annoucing it.

I think if Wada would want Division 4 team to save the series then he'll give them as much time as possible to make their game. The negative reception of FFXIV and the average reception of FFXIII will make Wada want more time and effort being put into FFXV.

So apparently Matsuno has started working on an unannounced project since he finished Tactics Ogre for the PSP. Could his new project be involving Final Fantasy XV?

I found this out via his Twitter. Somebody tweeted him, "I really enjoyed Tactics Ogre for PSP. I hope you continue to make great games like this."

Matsuno tweeted in reply, "Thanks you for your message. Please look forward to announcement of the next project."

So is that a next project a game by Square Enix? Matsuno's words are not clear enough. If anything, his words indicate his next project is already well underway and we're only looking forward to the public announcement of it. We know that there is no new Ogre game in development, so it can't be a new Ogre game. The only possibility is FFXV and Matsuno working freelance on it.

I really hope that's the case.

uhhhhhh, Team 4 HAD been doing something post-FFXII: the Tactics Ogre remake. Plus considering how FFXII's dev time turned sour and Matsuno ended up leaving so he could keep his sanity intact, I REALLY don't see his boys (or him personally) touching the FF series again. Plus PDD is actually one of the smaller teams and more than likely would have to yank in people from OTHER teams to get a good size for production. Minagawa is also currently busy sorting out the mess of FFXIV so he's probably not gonna be able to touch the series for awhile even if he were interested.

Galvaniser i think its possible Matusno is working on another Ogre Battle game, which i would say fits in with Squares recent press release, about how they want to continue to improve the FF, KH and DQ series, at the same time as establishing 2 new IPs from their Japan studios. or reviving 2 IPs, like Tactics Ogre and Parasite Eve.

so it seems to me, that Ogre Battle ? could be next in the pipeline for the FF Tactics teams. but unfortunately it could be something we dont care about like Madworld 2. not that the script for Madworld wont be good - we just wont get a FF12 type RPG experience we've been waiting for since 2007.

however Hiroyuki Ito has always worked on the FF series, so i think he will head the next game and it could be announced at TGS, as a launch title for the Wii U at the same time as multiplatform.

Aiddon, not all of PDD 4 worked on the Tactics Ogre remake; besides Minagawa commented on how the remake was only possible because it could be done very fast - in the space of 1 year. its been about 4 maybe even 5 years since the Japanese staff finished FF12. and we have no idea what they've been doing for that time. to the best of my knowlegde only the FF Tactics team worked on Tactics Ogre last year, since that was their game to begin with. so what the others are doing or have left Sqaure Enix is a mystery.

and from interviews with FF12 staff, i think they would do it again. the oppertunity to work on an FF game is one of the biggest oppertunties in gaming. besides Minagawa is working on FF14, surely it is evident from that he is willing to work on a big project.

one last thing; PDD 4 could be a relatively small team. but if we look at PDD 1, which is a much bigger team. their efforts are spread between 3 or 4 games at the moment. and we can see this is a very inefficent model. so i think its possible PDD 4 are working as a complete unit instead of spread between loads of projects they will get the project done.

however all we know is that there will be FF15, we simply dont know if PDD 1 will be allocated the project, or if it is already deep in production with PDD 4, who have not confirmed its existance at all. so we could be chasing vapourware!

Read through all the replies in this thread as I've already made a post with points on why it's likely that Division 4 will be making FFXV.

Also, only like 25% of the staff that worked on FFXII went on to work on Tactics Ogre for PSP.Where was the rest of the Division 4 staff? What happened to Hiroyuki Ito who was the Co-Director of FFXII? He never worked on the Tactics Ogre remake at all. He's not even credited under the "Special Thanks" section in the games credits, yet he was the Co-Directed FFXII with Hiroshi Minagawa and is still employed by Square Enix.

Secondly, Division 4 is not that small. It had enough staff when it made Vagrant Story and FFXII. Sure, some of the staff moved on to other projects and teams after FFXII came out, but that doesn't mean they can't reform to make another FF.

The only strong argument you have is that Hiroshi Minagawa is working on FFXIV, but then what about Hiroyuki Ito? He was the original Co-Director with Yasumi Matsuno before Matsuno left and he's been MIA since FFXII International came out in 2007. It's likely he's leading a team in Division 4 developing FFXV.

Matsuno can't be working on a new Ogre game. He already said in his twitter in May 2011 that he's not sure if there will be another Ogre game or not. Also, in an April 2011 interview with a Japanese gaming website, he said it was up to Wada if there will be more Ogre games or not. So it can't be an Ogre game for his current project.

I think his current project is a new HD game where he's working freelance on. I hope it's FFXV, but who know, it may not even be by Square Enix. However, seeing as the interview he had in April 2011 was done in the Square Enix Japanese HQ, I'm thinking his current project is indeed with Square Enix.

The reason that TO's team was far smaller than the FFXII team is simple: BECAUSE THE FFXII TEAM WAS ALSO COMPRISED OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE OF MATSUNO'S TEAM (specifically the PlayOnline team who did stuff like FFXI).  A lot of the people who worked on XII WEREN'T people Matsuno and Minagawa had worked with before, they were outsiders to them (ie non-Quest alumni). TO was actually made SPECIFICALLY by the original TO team who had been with Minagawa and Matsuno for over a decade, free of people who they didn't know.

As for Ito, I don't have a clue. Supposedly he's working on something, but unless he begged Matsuno to come back to do FFXV, I don't see it happening.

Actually, TO on PSP was not made by all the original Quest staff. There were new staff members on the team as well. Minagawa confirmed it in an interview that there were new staff that had never worked on Tactics Ogre before and were new to Division 4. Heck, even one of the Character Designers was a fresh face. Tsubasa Masao has not worked on any previous Matsuno game at either Quest or Square and yet he was working with Akihiko Yoshida on the character designs.

Also, you're incorrect about PlayOnline. PlayOnline was made by Division 4 (Matsuno's team) while FFXI was made by Division 3. It was Matsuno's team that made PlayOnline and also, incase you didn't know, FFXII was supposed to be an online game that would use it before they decided to make it FFXII offline.

-hands over cookie- Well, duh, it didn't have some of the original staff, that goes without saying. And yes, I'm aware Matsuno supervised PlayOnline. And like I said, unless they get more staff for XV (were the Tactics guys to actually be interested) it wouldn't happen because they wouldn't be big enough for it (funnily enough there are no designated Teams anymore). And due to the fact that Kawazu admitted that the PlayOnline and Tactics members of XII's team were butting heads over direction almost out of the starting gates there's definitely a lesson to be learned: do not mix up teams, it will ALWAYS end in a cluster**** of mediocrity and stupidity.

While I can agree that FFXV is probably being made by the Ivalice team, I certainly hope it's not out in 2014. 3 years away.

We used to get an FF game ever couple of years, FF9 and 10 were released nigh on within a year of each other. Now it's standard to wait 3 years between each main title even though they are being made by completely different teams? It can take 1 development team 7 years to make a game? In that time, Naughty Dog have developed an engine and made 3 games from it.

Hmm, pie.
